What've You Got Your Eye On?
Been eyeing the D300, and I like the spec's on it, think it'll suit me down to the ground. Was previously kinda thinking about upgrading to the D200, but wasn't quite ready to take the plunge ... just as well, as the D300 looks very tempting
![]() Anyone else planning to get the D300, or upgrade to something else? |

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
The D300 sounds good but I'm locked into Canon, and the 40D sounds good too.
But then I already have the 30D (and a 10D) so is it really worth upgrading? Will I take better pics with the 40D than with the 30D? Somehow I doubt it, so for now I'll resist temptation. Probably.

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
Have to admit silkstone that I did give fleeting consideration to changing over to Canon for my next upgrade
but the lens issue would mean further expense, i.e. buying new lenses from scratch, which would make it a very expensive exercise

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
Another one looking at the 40D here, I was going to wait until Christmas time but with the price now under £700 (with cashback) I may not be able to wait now!. As I'm currently using the 350D it's definitely going to be a good upgrade.

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
I've just succumbed and got a shiny new 40D this weekend - having been granted spousal approval (I'm blaming her lack of sleep, but not complaining!).
![]() Still playing around with it really but initial impressions are very positive. I'm not sure the Auto-ISO is useful, but having ISO displayed constantly in the viewfinder is a massive improvement over the 20D. The preview/review screen is SO much better than the 20D, too. Ditto the RGB histogram feature. Live View should mean I can remove the Angle Finder C from my wishlist, too. ![]() Now I must try and get some work done to help pay for it...

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
Not sure how it works on the Canon or what kind of shooting you do but on Nikon for sports and PJ it is often very useful. Remembering you can set upper and lower limits but use it with shutter priority to be able to stop the action and it will automatically up the IS if the light falls too far for max aperture.

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
I've had an "about face" recently and am sticking with the D200 (because it is an awesome camera) and am now on the hunt for a deal on a Nikon 105 vr macro.

well my next purchase is the Canon 100 - 400 is L, but have been thinking about upgrading my 30D for a 40D or do i hold out and get the successor to the 5D which would mean a big investment in a couple of of new pieces of glass aswell, but with no kids (yet) and all my plastic will be paid off early next year, might just go shopping.....

Re: What've You Got Your Eye On?
In order of priority from top to bottom
a) Nikkor lenses are covered by a worldwide warranty wherever you purchase them, and b) the £ to $ exchange rate makes them far cheaper than over here. Example: The 400mm f/2.8 costs £5500 here but retails for $7800 (£3850) at B&H... a difference of £1650 or about 30%. Assuming that I can get all the above listed lenses for 30% less than their UK retail values, I'd end up paying just £9,000 for £12,000 worth of lenses. The £3000 difference is nearly the cost of a single D3 body! Edit: forgot to add that I'd be selling at least one of my D2X bodies, if not both of them, after I've picked up the D3's. |
