Whoops....

Hi

Just ebayed one of these

Nikon Series E 50mm F/1.8 Lens | eBay

Though not this one.

Sooooo, this is about 70mm in old money.....?? (ie a bit telephoto?)

+I'm on manual for exposure and focusing?

The focusing doesn't worry me but exposure sounds tricky.

Might have been a bit hasty here.....

Re: Whoops....

It's 50mm in any form of money. The angle of view will be less on an APS-C sensor than on a full frame one; probably as you say about the same angle of view as you'd get with a 70mm lens on a full frame camera.

There the equivalence ends; the depth of field will not be that of a 70mm lens; the working distance will not be the same as a 70mm lens; any optical calculations you carry out will not be the same as a 70mm lens. But apart from everything except the angle of view, it is equivalent

In your position (but not knowing your camera) I'd be more worried about focusing than exposure. Exposure is easy with any camera (if you can adjust the settings); focusing isn't.

Pretty sure that Simpbow has used AIS with success lenses in the past - and maybe still does too.

Nikon Series E 50mm f1.8 lens | eBay

This is the joker in question...

So (at the raisk of asking idiot questions) I leave it on manual and work off the settings recommended in the top panel. Aperture I then do with the aperture ring and speed is done electronically as usual?

Can you guys just reasuure me the lens wiil be ok on the camera and not break anything (like some of the fish eye lenses are said to do)

A bit academic as a 70mm lens is not really what I wanted and I don't really know how much it'll be used now.

Re: Whoops....

Stick the camera on AV mode - Aperture Priority (what ever that is on a Nikon dial) - and set your aperture ( on the lens ) - the camera should work out the exposure correctly.

Obviously if you have bright / dark in the scene you will need to exposure compensate as normal.

Re: Whoops....

I concur with chrisa - i have a 135mm E series lens that I keep saying to myself I should sell but every time I get it out to do so I make the mistake of putting it on my camera and "just taking a few shots with it".

my body has a non cpu lens data menu option that lets me set up for several different old lenses so the lens size metadata gets filled out properly on the resulting raw/jpeg file for lightroom or whatever you use.

Re: Whoops....

Agree with Chris and lcraft. I have several manual lenses (from use with film cameras) that can be used on either of my digital cameras. The setting of non-CPU lenses is handy but I believe this facility is not available on the D200. It adds the possibility to use 3D metering on more recent pro-sumer bodies. You will be left with only centre weighted and spot metering. But for the rest it will work fine, but only in M(anual) or A(perture) modes. I do not believe it is classed as an Ai-S lens. These were more expensive than the E Series and were introduced later with a different aperture mechanism to allow automatic aperture use on the camera of the day.

If you think that you have had good service you can always award the members concerned some rep points via the icon at the bottom of their profile section in their posts

I'm not certain I want to get invovled in a star-awarding scheme.

Sounds a bit specific when some posts might emerge as being more useful at a later date or whatever.

For me, grateful thanks all round for many very helpful posts which are filling in a lot of gaps.

The rep points system is just fun thing that enables members to give a virtual pat on the back to someone who has helped them. If a post becomes useful at later date, rep points can still be awarded as there is no requirement for them to be awarded within a certain time. Often they are awarded by new members finding solution to a problem that was posted years earlier. There is also the facility in the system to leave a message for the recipient.

Back in the day, the rep point system was very active in the community as tangible way of showing appreciation, but is now rarely used.

Still, if you don't want to do it there is no obligation.

Pardon me for the moment my chest has flared up again. (x ray Tuesday).
