Why is Wide Winning?

Having been uploading and tidying the Equipment Reviews section I noticed that the top three hits are -

  • 22,190 Sigma 10-20mm
  • 8,716 Lowepro Stealth Reporter
  • 8,063 Nikon D200
The nearest lens to it comes in with 6,000 odd hits. What is it about the 10-20? Is everyone shooting landscapes or is it a case of "must have one before I settle down" so to speak.

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

On a more serious note I reckon people look at a decent shot taken with a wide angle lens & go "WOW", that really stands out from other shots. Especially for landscapes, which lots of us like to shoot.

The Sigma also comes in a price range most of us can afford. Just my 2p worth WHat do others reckon ?

Also backs up 9K hits on this thread :- http://www.pixalo.com/community/came...ots-21063.html

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

Well I have not got one (a wide one,But I do have a long one,a lens that is)......yet.....but I do believe that a lot of photographers are doing more landscape and scene pictures...... could it be something about not shooting in the street pictures that has turned people away from this type of photography.....Untill I make my mind up about going full frame the buying of lenses has stopped for me.......

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

I also don't have one but a couple of my friends do and when we talk about that lens the same answer pops up, They have for two reasons good for landscapes and good for taking funny close up images of their kids, the kids love those.

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

I have one (took over from my M42 16mm). Don't really use it that much for wide landscapes but it's great for wide closer/closeup work (in amongst geese/swans, closeup waterfalls, cars, etc) and where space is tight - it's also excellent value (good price, good quality)

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

I confess- I have one and it rarely leaves my camera! I live in the Rocky Mountains, and my other lenses simply aren't expansive enough to convey the monstrous scale of our landscape! The price was right for my student budget, and honestly, the world is just THAT much cooler through a wide angle

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

I have a 10-22mm Canon EF-S which I used for the last 5 years on my 20D and cannot wait to get an equivalent for my 5D2. During most of the 35 years or so I have used SLR's it is only in the last 5 years that affordable wide lenses have been available. I remember when photographers called 35mm wide. I find these really wide lenses great for dramatic landscapes, essential for architecture or urban scenes where space is a problem. They can also be used for unusual portrait shots as well. The 10-22mm used to be my favourite lens and most used lens on my 20D. For the moment (until Focus on Imaging) I am stuck with my widest lens being 24mm which is just not wide enough for me.

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

Cuz those extra 2 mm's at the wide end equate to an extra 10 degrees view

No simpbow, 2 of us, at least. I just thought this thread was for the inferior lens users only.

Re: Why is Wide Winning?

Because the 10-20mm is a winner. I must say it was a very sharp lens and the price is right with this one. So I'm not at all surprised
