Welcome to Pixalo Dazzarooney

I'd look at the Sigma 10-20. Great lens. Canon offer a 10-22, and this lens also has many fans. I think it is dearer than the Sigma, and I've seen it written that it is no better than the Sigma.

re: Which wide angle lens?

Another vote for the Sigma it is a great lens. Also worth considering is the Tokina 11-16 but they are quite hard to find at the moment. They are all reviewed in the appropriately named reviews section

Re: Which wide angle lens?

Canon 17-40L is a stunning lens for the money and will work equally well on a full frame camera should you wish to upgrade in the future.

Sigma 10-20mm is also a great lens that will open up a whole new world of photography to you. It may be just a little to wide though if you have no other lenses and it does require a little bit of getting use to. The Canon 10-22mm could also be considered but its more pricey than the Sigma albeit with slightly better build and picture quality.

If you have no lenses at all and are working to a budget, you can't really go far wrong with the Canon 18-55mm kit lens. For the money its a no brainer

Good luck with your search

Re: Which wide angle lens?

Yet another vote for the Sigma 10-20mm. Put it on f16, focused @ infinity you can shoot all day without having to change it and that'll deal with the majority of situations. On the Canon 450D it's a well balanced lens.

Re: Which wide angle lens?

I had a borrow of both the Sigma and the Canon and have to say i would pay the extra for the Canon. The build is better, picture quality is better, albeit not drastically so as the Sigma is pretty good on that front, and the AF is way better, the Sigma being very noisy on that front.

I very nearly bought the Canon lens but then fell in love with the 5D2 which I am aiming to purchase in a few months time. I can't use the EF-S lens with that one and wouldn't need to as the 17-40mm lens would actually be virtually the same at full frame. With that also being L series glass, it will be all I need for wide angle.

I must stress, I am putting the two side by side here but they are BOTH good lenses. Just that if you can get the right deal, I personally think the Canon version is worth paying that bit extra for. If you are on a tight budget, you will certainly not be disappointed with the Sigma.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Which wide angle lens?

While you are right with all the plus points you have highlighted that the Canon lens has over the Sigma I would question if those points are actually advantages in a wide angle lens.

Faster auto focus in the Canon – wide angle lenses are not usually used for anything other than landscapes. Landscapes are best shot of tripods and usually using manual focus.

Noisier auto focus on the Sigma – can be a problem for shooting wildlife but not for landscapes and certainly not when to use a 10-20 mm and fill full frame with anything remotely wild you would have to be so close that you would frighten it away long before you got to using the auto focus.

Build Quality – subjective, but usually balanced against cost. Take the Canon f/1.8 50mm prime, its build quality is suspect to say the least being constructed completely out of plastic and generally has a ‘toy’ feel about it. The image quality on the other hand is simply stunning and it is still a must have lens for most Canon shooters. I will happily accept that the build quality of the Canon wide angle lens is better than the Sigma but the Sigma is far from poor quality and is hardly likely to fall apart under normal use.

Each potential buyer has to weight up these points against the cost and decide for themselves if spending the extra for the better Canon is worth it to them. I personally went for the Sigma (I got a good deal on a second hand version) but I feel there is no absolute better lens when comparing the two. There is a better lens for each individual person but it’s not always going to be the same one

Probably the quietest lens I use is the Sigma 10-20mm - I'm always checking to see if AF is switched on! And the noisiest? The Canon 300mm f/4 IS L, by a country mile! IS clunks....... nuclear reactors shut down fearing containment breach - measures 7.5 on the Richter Scale! Wonder where that piece of Canon junk came from!
