wide angle lens for full frame canon camera

Hi there. I would like to start taking some landscape photos and I need a lens for my Canon 5D Mark II camera. How wide should i go? I want to buy Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L USM lens because then I can use it for portrait, but not only. Is 24mm wide enough on a full frame camera? Or should I rather think about 17-40mm F4 L USM one or even 16-35mm F2.8 L USM one? All I know is that 17-40mm is cheap if we compare it to the other lenses.

Any advice?

Re: wide angle lens for full frame canon camera

I'm no expert on Canon lenses, but i believe that the 17-40L would be good for landscapes, and I do like the 85mm focal length for portraits. I have a Nikkor 85mm f1.8 which is a real bargain and I'm sure that Canon also have one available. Your 70-200 is also good for portraits as is your 100mm f2.8.

I find the 24-70 f2.8 Nikkor an ideal general purpose lens and it lives on my D700 most of the time. I'm sure you will be able to use it for most things, but the 17-40 and the other lenses will add some flexibility.

I think some would say I have a selective memory

Having used my Sigma 10-20 and the Nikkor 17-55 on my D300 and the 14-24 on my D700, I'm not sure that you absolutely need to get this wide for landscapes unless you want to include some foreground interest very close to the camera, and the 17mm wide end will probably do 99% of what you want. There is also the issue of distortion when using the widest angles, although this can sometimes add to the image.

Re: wide angle lens for full frame canon camera

I have a 5D2 and had to buy a wide angle zoom. Although I have a 24-105mm f4 L IS which is my main lens for this camera which I also use for studio work, I needed something wider for landscapes and Architecture. My choices were:

a. Canon 16-35mm (rather than the older 17-40mm)
b. Sigma 12-24mm plus pay for converting my 20D to IR

I chose the latter and do not regret it but the 16-35mm is clearly the better lens but I could not afford it and the conversion. The Sigma 12-24mm performs well enough on the 5D2 but is useless for IR though fortunately I have a Canon 10-22mm EF-S which I can use on the IR camera.

So if you can afford it buy the 16-35mm.

Dave

Re: wide angle lens for full frame canon camera

Well, I use the 17~35mm Sigma, which I've owned for years, on my 5D. I used it on the film 5 before that, so I knew exactly what to expect. Actually, for landscapes, I mostly use my Sony R1. At the wide end, it's equivalent to 24mm and it's quite frighteningly sharp, right into the corners, at 100 ISO.

I know a chap who's been selling landscapes for years. He seldom goes wider than 50mm on a Hasselblad or 90mm on 5x4, so perhaps 35mm is as wide as you need on a 5D. On the other hand, Kevin MacDonnell, who sold more landscape shots than most other people, used to swear by the 15mm Hologon and carried a 17mm Tamron as well, at a time when most people thought 24mm extreme! It all comes down to your personal style.

Best of luck, whatever your choice.
