Wide angle lens help

We travel a lot and I find myself wanting to take photos of buildings but can't get far enough away from them to get something like a church in the shot because of them being 3-4 stories high or buildings that are half a block wide. What lens will let me take those kind of shots? I really don't want a fisheye. Or at least I don't think I do. I have a Canon 40D.

Thanks

Re: Wide angle lens help

The lens you are looking for is the: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM

Short of that I would recommend the Tokina 11-16 or the Sigma 10-20, but from what I hear the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM is a really GREAT lens.

However, if that is still not wide enough for you then I could suggest you look into getting a TS lens. Canon currently offers 17mm, 24 mm, 45 mm, and 90 mm tilt/shift lenses, however I am not sure how easy it is to find one of them, you might have to order it in. (Canon Tilt-and-Shift Lenses EF Lenses - Canon UK)

Hope that helps.

Re: Wide angle lens help

I agree with the advice so far. I have the Canon 10-22mm which I have used with my 20D for the past 5 years; it is great for buildings and landscapes but you need to straighten converging verticals with Photoshop or Elements.

A couple of other things to consider. The Canon 10-22mm is an EF-s lens so you cannot use it with a full frame camera such as a 5D. I now have a 5D Mk II so can no longer use this lens other than on my old 20D but I have no regrets about buying it as I knew this from the start. Do consider a Tilt-and-Shift lens as there are a number of new models out now. Unfortunately they are still quite expensive but you can correct the converging vertical at the time of takling the shot. I am certainly tempted to buy one for my 5D but not sure whether I can justify the cost.

Re: Wide angle lens help

I have the Sigma 10-20 and am very happy with it. This lens costs a lot less than the Canon so I would advise try to get your hand on both and seeing which one you prefer.

Re: Wide angle lens help

I give my vote foir the Sigma 10-20 too - fantastic value for money and many people rate it equally against the Canon. There has recently been a new model released, so the older one will probbly be even better value now.

These might be of help

Example shots with Sigma 10-20

However - for the photography you are talking about, my shots in york are probably more relevent - most of them were taken with the Sigma 10-20, but the EXIF should be there to confirm. Some have the verticals correcetd, and some not.

One word of warning though. If you are intending to correct the verticals you must leave lots of space above the top of your subject. If you don't, you will run out of room before the verticals are corrected.

What does not really come out in these pictures is how close you can be the the subject. Try one on your camera and you will be amazed!

Re: Wide angle lens help

Both the Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 10-20 are good lenses. The Canon may have a slight edge because there is less barrel distortion, but you pay a price premium for that. I got mine when there was a cashback offer which brought the price closer to that of the Sigma, so it may be worth looking out for that again.

Re: Wide angle lens help

as has been said hte canon 10-22 mm........ its a BEATIFUL lens and the image quality is comparable to L series glass, they reckon the only reason its not L series is cos the build quality lets it down and its E-FS.

it has however gone up in price lately i got mine 18 months ago and I could sell it now second hand for a lot more than i paid for it brand new.

Re: Wide angle lens help

Well folks I took the plunge today and walked out the door of the camera shop with a melted credit card and a brand new Canon 10-22. But dangO it takes great photos. Getting ready to head out to Colorado tomorrow early and will post some photos taken with it when I get back.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
