wide angle zooms
Do users of the likes of 10-20mm/12-24mm use polarisers.I ask because even on a 28mm lens I often 'over-do' the polarisation and get a horribly uneven sky,a useless image in fact!!.I can only imagine these wider 'beasts' will present even more risk of this.Or is there a 'fix' in photoshop.Or can the sky be 'polarised' in Photoshop itself?![]() PS.going to work soon and won't be back till late so I aint being rude if I don't reply!!! |

Re: wide angle zooms
Yes and no!
The uneven sky is not necessarily as a result of your overdoing the poloriser. You can get reasonable results with 10-20 lenses depending on the angle of the sun, the degree of polarization the focal length of the lens and format orientation.. Take a look in my St Albans album and the ones of the Cathedral (except the long shot and the mono) and the shadow of my former self. these were taken using the 10-20 and a poloriser. They are at the 20mm end of the lens and I have others from this shoot at the 10mm end that are awful and have not posted other than one to illustrate this very point, but I can't remember when as it was a while ago. I think that there could have been better results from the 10mm end with more a suitable combination of the above factors though, particularly the angle of the Sun, but at the time I was there the sun was just in the wrong place. I intend to keep trying with it as only then will I get a handle of what it can do in different conditions.

Re: wide angle zooms
Yes, I use polariser on 10-20mm
Yes, it does produce uneven sky (inevitably, as polarisation is most effective at 90 degrees to sun and then drops off) No, I don't (usually) mind it - it depends on the shot (+ the zoom factor) For the saturated sky, you can produce a similar(ish) result with PS using a graduated filter/layer and adjusting the saturation/hue/lightness - but it's never as good/effective as a polarising filter. Reproducing the reduced reflections is not so easy! ![]() |

Re: wide angle zooms
I don't use a polariser much on anything these days, especially a super-wide. It's good for cutting down reflections if that's what you want, but I find it easier to increase the intensity of a blue sky in the RAW converter (Bibble + RoyPRO plugin) which also gives an even result.

Re: wide angle zooms
Looks like yes and no to everything then . I suppose with memory so cheap, one shot with and one without could be the answer![]() |
