WTD : Cheap laptop for EMAILS & basic Word processing

In Laws Laptop (IBM Thinkpad 770) has finally gone splat. They only use for EMAIL, a little surfing & Word processing, so a new laptop is completely overboard & still too expensive for OAPs (£299 cheapest for refurb from PCWorld).

Anybody got a cheap laptop that can be used for web via internal modem ? Please PM anything you have

I have a Dell Inspiron 8500 from about three years ago. Has a 60Gb HD, 512Mb RAM and a PIII 1.5Ghz Processor.
Plus all the usual connectivity and stuff. I can load CS2 on it for anyone who wants it.
I just want more than £550 for it is all.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-814 which I *may* consider selling in the next week or two. Specs as much as I can remember:

P-III 1.2Ghz
14.1" display
256Mb RAM
16Mb graphics card (Trident Cyberblade)
20Gb HD
on board 56k modem and LAN
Infra-red
PCMCIA
TV-Out
2xUSB (think only 1.1 though but never had any compatibility issues)
WinXP Home + recovery CD

I'll drop you a PM if I decide to sell... haven't even thought about a price. Ball's in your court to make an offer if the time comes.

oh god i don't believe this.

just powered laptop up and it said 0% battery power remaining. i thought it must be lying so i pulled the power cable out to prove it. it switched off.

it still says 0% even now. need to whip the battery out and take a look see whats going on.

Its actually working again, think it was just a dodgy contact on the battery. Took it out, gawped at it hopelessly for 30 seconds, put it back in, job done.

[edit] think one of us needs to change avatars. Feels like I'm talking to meself.
