Re: Back up
I got a 500g LaCie Porsche Design (best buy in Digital Photo) from amazon for £65 a while ago. Don't know what current prices are.

Re: Back up
I've got that one too, I got it for £70 off amazon....but having just looked (that's what the ellipses were
), they do seem to have gone up. Look around on other sites like Play.com and mymemory.co.uk to find the best deal |

Re: Back up
Just had a quick look on Which?. For mains powered external drives they rate Seagate FreeAgent 500g at £110, or the Western Digital MyBook Pro 500g at £125. The Western Digital has Firewire too so it transfers data quicker. Prices shown are their target price and can often be beaten.
However, both of these are at about the same price bracket as the LaCie, so maybe not much help. I think the LaCie will be the most compact, but I find the connections on the front panel are a pain as the trailing wires get in the way. |

Re: Back up
Do you have any old internal hard drives?
In that case you could consider getting a external case and putting it into that. I have just done that with a 250 GB drive that was getting to small for routine use and it works fine. If you do this just make sure that the case will take the size of HD you have and it is compatible IDE or SCUSI. Some only go up to about 250 GB. The one i have is from Gtech and it will take up to 1 TB drives. At the PC fair I was at today the cases were about £20 and a 500 GB drive about £60 from memory

Re: Back up
I had a Seagate 500gb and it only lasted 2 days. Very disapointing.

Re: Back up
Mmmm... I guess you can be unlucky with anything. I have 300 and 400 GB Seagate external drives that have been OK for about 18 months now, although they're not the Free Agent type.

Re: Back up
Just a form of the SeaGate brand, so a brand name really.

Re: Back up
Or a model designation.

Re: Back up
I think it's just a name for the type of housing which they keep changing to keep up with fashion.
Bright yellow stripes are obviously 'real cool' at the moment. |
