BIG problems

ok today as i was working in raw, i saved my tiffs then tried opening them in PCS2........ and......NOTHING! photoshop wont open anything, the raw converter works and i can view the files on bridge, but when i try to open anything photoshops comes up and then nothing happens............. at all...with any format of image.......

i restarted the computer and the left click didint work. so i did CTRL ALT DELETE and there are a huge amount of processes running, havent a clue what most of them are but i stopped a couple and then left click worked. i tried it again after restarting , same thing.. but after i close down a couple processes it works, doesnt have to be the same processes.
started it in safe mode and the same thing happened except this time i opened the tast manager didint close down anything and the left click worked........ BUT CS2 STILL wont open anything..... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

does it sound like a memory problem? have tried running a repair on CS2 nothing happened still not working... not working in safe mode either..... PLEASE! someone help!
and if i am not around you will know its conked out completely, and if it does that i wont be back for a good long while unfortunately cos there no way i can get a new PC

Fi

Re: BIG problems

I've just checked my task manager and there are about 2.5 pages of tasks running!

I'm no computer expert, but often these sort of problems are due to a lack of availabe RAM, but this is usually cured by a re-start.

I googled 'ps will not open tif files' and came up with this:

A long shot: when you have large files in big directories it can take a long time for the operating system to assimilate all the information. You have to watch the hard drive light in your computer (assuming there is one, and if it indicates activity, you just have to wait, In XP pro there is no indication that the operating system is trying to read the files when you have a large directory but the key is the hard drive light. You may have to wait a long while before the files open. PS also requires lots of RAM and you may have a RAM problem as well.

Googling 'ps will not open files' came up with

This may be due to a corrupt preferences file. You may choose to either delete the Preferences in C:\Documents And Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\VERSIONNUMBER\Adobe Photoshop VERSIONNUMBER Settings\, or the easier way would be to hold down SHIFT+CTRL+ALT immediately as soon as Photoshop begins to load. You will then be prompted if you want to delete your preferences file. Click Yes and Photoshop will work again.

I'd be inclined to save the preferences before you deleted it.

It is probably worth doing your own google search and see if any other members have other ideas.

Just an after thought. Your new camera has larger file sizes than the old one. It just might be that the bigger files are soaking up your processing power and RAM. In future try processing smaller batches. I'm assuming you have been doing your housework and defragging the HDD and deleting temp files etc.

Good luck.

Re: BIG problems

Might be lack of disk space and/or PS temp files. Try:
Close PS
Start Windows Explorer
Look on drive C root for files "Photoshp Temp" or similar and delete

Re: BIG problems

I've just tried the same procedure the only difference being I am running Vista Ultimate. Oh and my CPU usage is about 6% with normal processes running (about 20)
  • view cr2 file in bridge (no problem)
  • open in ACR (no problem)
  • process and save as tif (no problem)
  • opens in CS2 (no problem)
This is not a solution Fi, just confirms that it should work. I can only add that it might be memory or is your Swap Disk too small, full etc.

No, don't check in Adobe, check with Windows Explorer

Adobe uses large amounts of memory, or would like to. To keep this to a minimum the prog uses temporary files - which can be up to 4GB!

Check your space on drive C

Re: BIG problems

The Swap Disk is a defined disk/partition which CS2 uses for temp files while you are working. Ideally it should be on a separate disk/partition from where CS2 is. You can set it via Preferences in CS2.

It's a Scratch Disk. Windows uses Swap Disks

Temp files are created at the Scratch location and can be accidentally left behind without being deleted (usually 'cos PS crashes). All you need is a few times and that's a good chunk of disk consumed by unecessary files

Re: BIG problems

I have no real suggestions I'm afraid Fiona. However, I use CS2 also and I make the basic tweaks in the Raw converter then click 'open' and it automatically opens as Tif in Photoshop.I work on one file at a time, ie I do the basics on one file in Raw then open it in Photoshop to complete any further work and 'save as' [whatever].I have a 6 year old computer and while slow I dont have any probs [touch wood].I'm sure someone on here will have the solution so don't get too down
