head scratcher....for me anyway!

O.k. I'm having a problem, and here it is.....

I own my own domain name and i also have a hosting server for my web-site, both are different companies (easily for domain name and Qoozz for server for those who want to know).
These both for me work perfectly, i can type in my web address and 'easily' will forward me on to 'qoozz'. However i now want to alter things slightly and i am really hurting my head and will soon go crazy if this brick wall i'm hitting it on doesn't fall down soon.

say my web address is www.1!2@3£4$.com i will find my home page at that address, but then when i go deeper into my web-site i find that my address stays the same (for example if i am viewing an image called 'star' on my gallery page i would expect an address such as www.1!2@3£4$.com/gallery/star.jpg, whereas i just get www.1!2@3£4$.com) this is a problem because if i refresh or bookmark i always go back to the homepage.

I understand that this is all to do with frame masking etc. But when i turn this facility off i can type www.1!2@3£4$.com and go to my page but the web address bar will now show http://www.th5uyiiir.756578fj.com/us...ml/gallery.htm or some other long winded address that bares no relation to me. This i dont want to do.

What i want to see is www.1!2@3£4$.com/gallery/star.jpg

But i just can't figure it out.

Any internet aware people that may offer a hand i would be very happy!

Thanks!

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

The domain name held with "easily" is stored on their system along with entries for the dns nameservers at your hosting company "Qoozz". This is the link between the two companies.

I think the issue lies with the way the website was setup with your hosting company. Did you create the website and upload yourself via FTP or was it a website created using wizards by your hosting company ?

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

I did all the work, as i have mentioned i have Cpanel with my hosting company so i have access to virtually everything i'd ever need to.
In answer though i did create it and upload via ftp (or similar method), and it wouldn't surprise me if i have set it up wrong.

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

It sounds to me like you are forwarding your domain name from your registrar to your host in a frame instead of doing it via nameservers. If you do it with nameservers you should then be able to set everything else up properly through your Cpanel and upload either through file manager or virtually any FTP program once it has propagated.

You should also get the benefit of emails, databases etc that way without being limited by framed forwarding.

How long have you had the domain/hosting and is it setup with nameservers pointing at your hosts or via frame forwarding?

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

I've had the domain for 7ish years and the hosting for only about 9/10 months (the owner of the servers gave it to me for free but it has all the functionality of a bought one [i don't know him, he just said he could and i said i'd have it]).

I think i remember something about the frame forwarding thingy, but my domain host have altered their control panel around and i am struggling to re-find it. I can locate the masking, but that is different to frames (i think?).
I do have the benefit of being able to use the e-mail with my domain name via my cpanel webmail.

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

I've just checked out my domain provider settings (123-reg) and I have these options:

1) No web-forwarding - If you select this option anyone typing ianhoughton.co.uk into a web browser will be shown the 123-Reg default page.

2) Framed web-forwarding to a single page - If you select web-forwarding to a single page the destination URL can have a specific filename on the end (e.g. index.htm). It could just point to a directory (URL ends with /) in which case the files displayed would depend on the webserver 'directory index' settings. The destination URL will be replaced by ianhoughton.co.uk.

3) Non-framed web-forwarding to a single page - This option is the same as above however the destination URL will always be displayed in the address bar of the browser.

4) Framed web-forwarding - The destination URL will be replaced by ianhoughton.co.uk

5) Non-framed web-forwarding - The destination URL will remain in the browser's address bar.

I have my main domain ("http://www.ianhoughton.co.uk"]) setup with option 1 and the nameservers pointing to my hosting provider. My other domain ("http://www.ianhoughton.com") is setup with option 5 and brings up the .co.uk domain.

I think as Steve has rightly said, the issue is with the options with the domain provider and not your hosting company

I hope this helps....

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

If you have a proper hosting account (and since you have Cpanel it sounds like you have) then there is no reason to forward your domain via a frame. The correct way is to direct your domain via the nameservers. You should find out the correct nameservers from your host and then go to where you registered the domain name and alter them (there is always two) there. It can then take up to 24 hours for the dns to propagate and your domain address will then correctly point to your webspace/website and gallery without any of the restrictions of frames.

HTH

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

A mistake i think, URL masking is the same as frames.
I may be following you Steve, i set it to not mask my real web address, then i give myself a quick lesson in cpanel to figure out how to cover my real web address from there, does that sound right?
May find what i need under the addon domains section or something similar in cpanel!

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

I am not following you now...did you set up frame forwarding to mask your real domain name...or to have more than one domain name point at one address?

For instance I own several domain names and have them all (although they are completely different) point at one domain. They are not however masked so when you go to abc.com and its pointed at xyz.com...when at the actual page it will show xyz.com irrespective of what you typed in?

For this set up I altered the name servers with my registrar to point at my hosts and then in the Cpanel for xyz.com I added abc.com as a parked domain.

Hope that helps?

Re: head scratcher....for me anyway!

Right, i'm back now, and have read what you have said.

Just to clarify, i set up frame forwarding to mask my real domain name. At the time it was quick and convenient and it worked.

I'm now going to play with one or two things (namely parked domains) and see what the results are!

Thanks again for the info.
