Errr, all very helpful but what are you going to do with the IP address once you've got it? If you check out anyone on AOL, they all have the same IP address anyway so that's as far as you'll get.

Just unsure as to why you would really want to get that info.

As per Rob's comment. Even if you're trying to track down spam, it's very unlikely that the originator even KNOWS they're sending it as it'll be caused by their PC being compromised by a mass-mailing virus (which is under the control of the spammer).

Hello peeps, my son in law was getting emails from someone asking him for a date. This was causing a slight domestic problem so I traced the email as per instructions to an address in one of the eastern blocks.

It was handy because it calmed the potential crisis.

lol a similar thing happened to a buddy of mine. He got one of those spams where the sender - a chick - wants to meet you but could you first call this number to arrange when and where. Anyway, he deleted it and a while later his gf was going through his email(*) and found it and went ballistic.

I only found out coz he called me to tell her it was spam.

I regularly used to trace emails which were virus infected to inform the source that they were infected.

That is until I did that with my sister in law, in Oz. "How do I know you are who you say you are?" she asked in response. So I 'phoned her. Given that by the time I 'phoned it was after midnight there, my brother was away and she was asleep in bed, she was not amused! She's never questioned my existence since tho'!
