iPad Pro

iPad Pro

Super. Computer. Now in two sizes.

iPad Pro is more than the next generation of iPad ó itís an uncompromising vision of personal computing for the modern world. It puts incredible power that leaps past most portable PCs at your fingertips. It makes even complex work as natural as touching, swiping, or writing with a pencil. And whether you choose the 12.9-inch model or the new 9.7-inch model, iPad Pro is more capable, versatile, and portable than anything thatís come before. In a word, super.

12.9-inch iPad Pro An epic screen that turns advanced tasks into brilliant, immersive experiences.

9.7-inch iPad Pro Incredibly portable, with an unprecedented combination of versatility and performance.

Retina Display An awesome display of progress.

The key to the iPad experience is the display. Itís how you interact using Multi-Touch, and how you view content in spectacular detail. So we created our most vivid Retina display ever. The 12.9‑inch iPad Pro has the highest resolution of any iOS device. And the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro screen ó our most advanced display ó is the brightest and least reflective in the world.

Full details:

Re: iPad Pro

I have a 128G Air 2, and I'll be getting a 9.7" Pro 256G Cellular model and the SD reader. Not saying I'll use it all the time, but there are occasions where I've wished I could offload my dSLR to my iPad.. to do some basic editing/posting..

i wouldn't do it just to offload images to the iPad. CF/SD cards are generally too cheap to bother with that.

I mentioned it at the time of posting Sunday, I actually posted from my iPad to pixalo after doing basic edits.. It was not as simple as the computer and I couldn't do it without third party software, but I was able to do it. It can only get better from here, IMO..

Re: iPad Pro

I have older 64gig and never get close to needing more. Main uses or writing short stories for genealogy and showing off pictures when the old boys get together at church on Sunday's and talk cameras. We also have an app for our church lessons we use at church, they embrace the tech of apps. and phones. I have a usb plug for down loading pictures from the camera, it works for jpegs and I guess it would be good for storage but I have G-force drives for the lap top to manage storage when out of town . I just usb the pictures
At home straight back and forth plug into the desk. You got me thou with the smart card, older models no have. I would love to have it, love it on the lap top. Now,,,,where has the phone gone, I still need it but I could save some money if I didn't have it. I dream of an up grade with a normal phone, why not.sounds good. I have enjoyed talking pads to you, have learned a few things, that's good. I really like the pages app. I send done stories over the cloud to my desk top, manage mail, buy camera stuff and what ever. I use my pad more then anything except my deck top.

I use it more and more as time goes on, but in it's current incarnation it will never replace a desktop machine.

I use it a heck of a lot more since Lightroom Mobile has gotten good..

Re: iPad Pro

The deed is done. I ordered a 256G iPad Pro 9.7" friday. Bought the new SD card reader and an Apple Pencil at Best Buy friday afternoon and have been using the reader the past day loading dSLR shots onto my iPad while in the car. Very nice.. Thankfully my dSLR does both SD and CF....

Looking forward to getting the iPad Pro monday.. I have a list of things to test out..

I may never use all 256G of space, but I'll try my best

Re: iPad Pro

LC,,, how is your new 9.7" working for you. The 12 is so ingrained in my mind going smaller is like going to the wind. Anyway I mentioned I wish I had a phone so the wife and I started out testing the recording messageing, then going over to Facetime was new for me and it's like the irst time for Facetime. Sense my wife is nice to look at and has a wonderful voice I will be using it more. Now those have been around for awhile,,what or the really cool upgrades,,

Re: iPad Pro

I've been loving mine. I wasn't sure if the tru-tone screen thingy was going to be worthwhile - they use a sensor to determine what color balance the screen should have given the light that it's in. wow when it's turned off the whites look blue and when on they're just a creamy white..

It's definitely faster editing 36MP images.. I've been importing some of my shoots right to the iPad.. I think a lot of apps need to be updated to REALLY take advantage of the A9X chip.. so that's kind of a waiting maneuver right now..

It is unfortunately NOT USB3. For some stupid reason apple decided to keep the 9.7 inch USB2 while the 12 is USB3.. so it takes a long time to import my images from the SD reader.. (this is the only point I am unhappy about)

I was happy that the dimensions were the same or darned similar, so my expensive top hide cow skin case i bought for my air 2 just slipped onto my 9.7 pro..

The pencil is quite nice. But apps are lagging behind still on truly implementing it's use.. Every day that is changing with new releases..

Anyhow, I've been loving it, my boy has been loving my "old" air 2. Everyone's happy.. I don't know if I'll ever utilize the 256 gigs of storage but I know I'll never worry about it..

the 12 is not a device I would use on the go. I would put it away like a laptop and take it out when I got where I was going. it's just slightly too big. If I had a 12" I would probably buy a mini for use on the go..

I haven't posted in a while - I've been busy traveling around taking pics but not posting much. That'll change today..

Re: iPad Pro

Thanks for all the info LC,, I have had usb 2 for so long I might pass out with an up grade. Thank goodness for backward compatible. My usb g-force 1t hard drives work on two, but made for 3. When I spend any amount on nice kit it always gets a new case to carry, extra pockets and so on,,,also when it slips off my lap on the floor when in the case I feel "it is alive" and not another apple on it's way to the worm farm. Things have been slow, everybody might be playing with their 9" tablets. Not sure about the color change on light for the screen. I guess I'll have to look even thou the usb2 is so much like apple. Keep us apdated later on when you really get a good grip of the newness.

Re: iPad Pro

Well six months and some change later..

I use the iPad Pro a lot. but mostly to consume content and check websites. Not create.

However, if you are an Adobe creative cloud user, Lightroom mobile/lightroom for tvOS and Lightroom on the desktop all converge into one, letting you sync to your cloud account and view your photos on your big screen tv and more and more editing options are coming to the iOS version.. It's getting there step by step as Apple provides more API hooks to do what developers want/need..

I still use it most as a nook and web surfer. but the iOS 10 toolchains they've set up for opening files with or sending to dropbox/etc are becoming more powerful. It still is easy to create a mess in your photo camera roll doing edits and saving from various apps.. they need to either create a temp file system or outright let you pass tiff or PNG data back and forth between apps through their share plugins. SOMETHING needs to change there..

The color correction is good.. I can't stand using my son's iPad Air 2 that I gave him when I bought the Pro 9.7...

hmm. what else to report on... battery life is excellent.. speed is fantastic.. I have an app that does realtime fractal rendering made by kai Krause of Kai power tools fame. terribly addictive.. it was good on the air 2, but incredible on the Pro. I can only imagine it on a 12 for image quality - speed wise it wouldn't be faster as there are more dots without an improved GPU. in some respects the 9.7 is speedier in that respect as there's less screen to manage..

I really like having it, and wouldn't give it up. but it hasn't really changed how I work. If I need heavy lifting I switch over to my Mac with it's tree screens and lots of apps open.. . It's more supplemented how I work when I am not at my computer. Doing stuff that a smaller iOS device like a touch or iPhone wouldn't be comfortable on... I have a iPhone 6s+ and sometimes the stuff I need to click on is elusive or too congested because of poor app design.. the iPad (pro or not). makes up for that..

I'm waiting for my iPhone 7+ to come. Shipping date is November 23rd. but people are telling me they've been getting their phones early.. Maybe I'll be one of those lucky ones. The processor in that is amazing - on single tasking, certain jobs are faster on it than with a Mac Pro, which uses a 3 year old Xeon processor now. (shame on Apple).. I imagine that's going to be fun to play with. and it's incredible that they've finally dumped the 16G entry level for 32G. it goes 32/128/256 now.. I didn't even order the 256. I have the 128G 6S+ which is top of the line, and I opted for the middle of the line 128 on the. 7+... (though I have till it ships to change my mind... )

I'm currently spinning numbers in my head whether I want to trade it in or pay it off and resell. It's looking like I can get $100 more than it will cost to pay it off.. BUT then there's PayPal and eBay fees on a $675 phone.. doesn't seem worth it, when I can just turn the phone in and my contract for the equipment restarts at zero with no risk of being ripped off or scammed..

Couple last thoughts on the iPad Pro... I'm still not using the pencil as much as I thought I would. Apps that make good use it of are still far and wide..

It's cool but inconvenient at times. I have no place to store it in my case. so it needs a pocket or bag.. secondly the damned lightning connector cap is so easy to lose.. I meant to ask at the Apple Store last time I was there, if they sell caps because I lost mine five times and the sixth time it just isn's showing up.. When I do get another cap, rest assured I will be buying a rubber retainer strap that fits over both sides and holds it on to the pencil.. I've also had time to reflect on how much of a lever it creates on the lightning port when plugged in and I think it's an unfortunate design.. A much better design would have been a lightning to lightning cable with a female socket on either the end of the cable or in the pencil. Female socket on the pencil could mean charging from a USB port as well as from the iPad.. (oh if only I were CEO)

Now the platform interaction between macOS 10.12, and iOS 10 are incredible. being able to start something on the iPad and move over to macOS or visa versa to my phone or iPad as long as the app exists is just great. also shared clipboard happens over iCloud.. I always tell my windows support clients that use iOS devices that they're only getting half of the experience by not using Macs...

my current mission is to convert all my paper over to Pdf.. using devonthink office pro, and their iOS offering for being able to sync to my iPad and carry all that info with me.. (yes a totally non photo related task)..

It's taking some discipline on my part, but I've also used it as an excuse to get a couple toys, like a visoneer duplex scanning page scanner bar that you just run your paper through and it spits out a PDF.. great stuff.. that will greatly enhance my iPad usage I think.. I can use it's camera to take pictures of pages as well as creating the content on the iPad..

but I think you might see the repeating pattern.. iPad makes content consumption incredible. It is still catching up on other stuff.. For instance it would be great if I could control that scanner from iOS..

enough rambling - any questions this might bring up, fire away...

Re: iPad Pro

something to add.. I do much better with the iPad when I set it up as an easel with my case and connect a bluetooth keyboard to it. My keyboard has three host settings so I can auto switch between my computer, my iPad and my iPhone without re-pairing.. I am considering getting one of those little roll-up bluetooth keyboards to carry around with me so I can haul this to - say mcdonalds and type things while enjoying a Big Mac and free wifi..

Re: iPad Pro

Interesting read on the new pads and so on. Hope I don't sound like a cry baby even thou I like the things that improve. I am in a life of retirement and my problem is how fast some things we use upgrade so fast. I can't believe how many new models there are from my first SLR so it goes down the line. I did stay up and printed a picture from my old pad to a wifi printer,,,worked very nice. My wifes printer, I sat in the dark and was sneeky about it. I hope my old pad just keeps cranking, but I feel like I see the day when support goes away for it, feels like a cold wind out of the great apple adobe wars, but maybe it will be a little less disrespectful.

Re: iPad Pro

Oh yes, in the Apple ecosystem your computer has a birth date and a date when it becomes unsupported. The latter happens less frequently now with as powerful as the CPUs are getting in iOS devices.. as with macOS, the GPU support is usually what takes it out..

I looked mine up and it is an ipad 2 third generation celluar. I read here and for the first time in my mail about the non support for the pad 2. The grandkids watch the older imac, tear drop style 17inch screen. Ya know, it's I used to love video and used final cut. In the g4/g5 days I morgaged the house to buy it. My G5 was like a 1970 big block chevelle with two barrel fans blowing on those hot processors. Love to here them kick in. I had noticed early in 2004 that apple became kinda of unfriendly. When my g5 went to leaking coolent all over I walked into the store and ask for an upgraded version of FC for intell chips. The guy looked at me like I was stupid and said they didn't have unupgrade and this is how they made money. I think it was just to much sunday school, I wanted to hit the guy. My laptop will run FC. I have let my video skills fade even tho they have a new verson now for quite awhile. My bad.

Re: iPad Pro

I remember the G5 turbines kicking in, indicating warp speed was approaching.. Had one, but an air cooled one. ALL of those water cooled ones ended up leaking.

Final Cut X is $299 now. don't have to mortgage. . also they did port FCP to Intel.. I have it installed on my machine and it still runs..

it just took a while to come out.. I stink at video though. I use it for a fancy slideshow maker and video splicer..
