Re: Jpegs in camera raw?

RAW and JPEG are two different file formats. Adobe RAW is designed to convert the native RAW image into something else (i.e. a TIFF file). The things that you can do in Adobe RAW are because you get the 'raw' data from the sensor and you can then apply processing options to it. When you shoot in JPEG those processing options are applied by the camera so it is already too late, the sensor information has gone. That's why JPEG images are so much smaller than RAW.

I think what I am trying to say (to simplify) is that the information a RAW processing tool needs does not exist in a JPEG file so even if you could open it you would be unable to do much with it.

I hope this makes sense, not sure I am explaining very well. Probably someone else will come along and do a better job!

Re: Jpegs in camera raw?

I think I know what you are asking...........
CS3
click edit > click preferences (from the drop down)
click file handling > then from the box
tick "prefer ACR for Jpegs"
and jpegs will open by default in ACR

Actually you may be surprised just how much adjustment there is in ACR
with a "good quality" Jpeg

(Cue the old argument which is better raw or jpeg )

Well no argument that you can still post-process JPEGs but the whole point of shooting in RAW is that you can apply all the various image processing steps after the fact rather than in the camera. I'm not making any argument about which is better, it's just a statement of fact that there is more information in a RAW file than in a JPEG file.

I shoot in RAW because I still mess up my shots with depressing regularity and the options available in RAW give me much better options to recover them.

Agreed there is more information in raw than jpeg but what ever you choose to "shoot in" if the detail is lost its lost.

You and me both
I shoot in either ( I just have the camera defaults set to zero when shooting Jpeg)
and to be perfectly honest I have never noticed
any real difference in post processing.

Re: Jpegs in camera raw?

I did demo this once at the Digital Imaging Group by taking a Raw plus JPEG and opening both in ACR. I found that you could alter the exposure of the Raw file by more than +/- 2 stops. However, you could make a small exposure adjustment to a Jpeg file (perhaps 1/3 of a stop). It may be convenient to use the tools availalble with ACR even if you are limited to JPEG.
