Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer – Good or bad?

After reading about certain members using Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer I enquired as to its usefulness.

It was suggested to start a new thread so here it is along with a poll…

I would like to know if you use it, if you have never heard of it until now, if you have tried it and decided not to use it or if you use something else instead?

Please add any thoughts or comments too

For those who have never heard of it or tried it we have just added it into our download section HERE

Re: Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer – Good or bad?

I find it useful to be able to see the thumbnails. It saves having to put them all into a converter to see them. Before I used this software I used to shoot RAW + jpeg. This meant you can view an enlarged image in windows by double clicking on the jpeg (the jpeg thumbs and RAW files would load side by side) at the expence of fewer images on the card.

Like P-E, I would not say I loved it, but it is handy.

Isn't it as easy to open up Photoshop Bridge or the likes of RawShooter and view the thumbnails there? To me that also has the added advantage of already having your image editing application open ready for work

Probably, but if you only want to have a quick look wothout working on the images, Bridge can be slow in loading up, especially if you have lots in the folder. Also if you only want to work on one or two images, it is easy to whip through the thumbs to select the one you want, then open it/them.

As I said, I don't love it, but it can be handy.

Re: Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer – Good or bad?

Have used it for quite a while now. I used to love it 'til I discovered recently that it doesn't always show pic's accurately colour-wise, so that when I open a RAW which I loved in MS raw viewer, it looks cr@p in the editor, + sometimes vice versa. I wonder how many shots I've binned that would have looked good in my editor

I do find the viewer's slideshow feature an extremely handy and fast way of viewing a folder full of RAW's straight after downloading from camera to PC

Re: Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer – Good or bad?

Well having just downloaded & tried this, I would say it takes the same time to process all the thumbnails as Adobe Bridge, so no real time advantage. Still worthwile having though for when you are exploring the hard drive.

MS RAW thumbnailer: too slow and too useless - but it is free!
Adobe Bridge: too slow and too useless - but it does come with PS!

I take it you have added 'ThumbsPlus Pro' to our download section so that we can all try it out and be thankful for your wonderful suggestion
