My Comp the story continues

well as some of you already know i had to hand my comp in to the shop..... well it was SUPPOSED to finally be sorted today....... but yep u got it.,, its still in the shop..... so........ suggestions to my next course of action would be appreciated.
the story:

Thursday 13th March: Computer chipset fan breaks down, phones shop told to bring it in they have a fan in stock, a half hour job. Takes comp down returns an hour later. Told Fan doesnt fit we are ordering thermal adhesive. Will be in on Monday.

Monday 17th: phones shop adhesive hasnt arrived phone back tomorrow.

Tuesday 18th: Phones shop, Yes your machine is finished come and get it. Goes down to shop, picks up machine. On arriving at home notices something amiss with the back. Opens machine, notes that exhaust fan has been removed, 2 USB ports at the front are not connected, fan on rear of case not connected.
Shop shut.

Wednesday 19th March: Comp goes back to shop. SHop guy full of apologies, said that the exhaust fan was not needed to they removed it ( does this mean if a hard drive of 120gb is not needed it would be ok for them to remove it and replace with smaller?)
Told to replace it and reconnect everything.
Wednesday late afternoon comp is connected boots up, then itis noticed that the front two USB ports arenot working ( they werein full working order when comp went in)
Phones shop. Guy at shop says @ Oh i forgot to say when it was picked up that i left the two USB ports disconnected because everytime i reconnect them the machine wont boot up. I then tells the guy that i have never came across this level of utter ineptitude and unprofessionalism ( not sure he understood me), told to take it back. Takes comp back and tells him that he has until 4:30 tomorrow to make sure that it is fixed or trading standards are going to become involved. I am told that if he fixes it i have not to bother bringing it back for anything else. I laugh and tell him im not THAT much of an idiot!

So0oooo comp is still in shop, what do i do if he has still not sorted it tomorrow? take it back and not have enough USB ports for what i need? or what?

Fi

Re: My Comp the story continues

I would not have the left the machine with him. I would have got my parts back and demanded a full refund. Furthermore I would write to the local newspaper explaining the full story in detail, I am sure they would be interested in a shot that believes its ok to steal from customers.

Finally, since your initial problem had a lot to do with the computer overheating I would be safe in saying that your rear fan is probably far from 'not needed'

Re: My Comp the story continues

Steve, i did think about doing what u suggested BUT as they have attached the new chip set fan to the board with a thermal adhesive they would probably wreck the board taking it off again. writing to the local paper is a good idea however.

I couldnt believe how they were acting as if were my fault especially when i pointed out that the USB were working fine when it went in and the least they can do is return it in the same conditin they got it!

I do remember you saying about your pc, when it rains it pours ay Fi

Sounds like the Chuckle brothers have started up in business tell them its not on Fi and you want your computer back in exactly the same condition as you gave it to them, then take it elsewhere.

Dont pay them a penny

Re: My Comp the story continues

I wish I lived closer because it would have been sorted correctly 1st time.

I have a fan in a rather unusual place, being at the front blowing over my 3 hard drives. They run cold and hence I don't blow disk drives on an annual basis.

Would they have removed that because it was in the wrong place ?

They are utter incompetents and should never be allowed near a computer.

If they are leaving the USB connecters off because the machine won't boot with them on what the hell have they done as it worked before. A USB coonection will only stop the machine if it's set to boot from removable devices first and can't find any, it would have to have had bios settings messed with.

Fiona I would implore you before you run your machine too long to find somehwere else, or a computer literate engineer to check it out. It would worry me that the main chip fan they have fitted hasn't been done correctly.

If I remember they had to bodge the main fan to get it to fit.

I hate to shout but you NEVER EVER do that. You can still buy fans for 386 machines that haven't been sold for 10 years.

When you get it back if your stuck then let us know the make and model of mainboard, usually written on the board and I'll see if I can get some info before you go too far with it.

These people make me mad, they give computer engineers a bad name and that makes me very angry.

ps I've been building PC's since they first emerged in the early 80's, my first one was made out of salvaged parts and is still running 27 years later

i wish u had lived closer as well!
andyes that was my fear that they had messed with the bios settings. I think i know more about computers than they do..........im resigned to the fact that i will most probably be without a computer for a long time because of their ineptitude.

Re: My Comp the story continues

If I have to drive to Scotland and sort it you won't be without it too long.

1st thing though is get it back even if you have to lose the money you paid.

I'm sure a new computer will cost more.

Then do some very quick basic tests to see if even works and report back.

Oh and I ain't kidding about driving up their, just to prove not all engineers are P**cks

sorry my blood boils at this sort of thing, especially as PC's when you get to know them aren't that difficult
