new MB windows problem
Hiya all, just wondered if any of you lot might be able to help,
I recently replaced the motherboard in my pc, 1st problem was that when it tried to start the fan would start for about 1 second then stop and nothing. replacing the psu solved this problem and it booted into the bios, time and date was set and away we go...... all the way to the blue screen of death. So In goes the windows pro xp cd and boot from that, went to the repair section accepted agreement etc files copied accross then reboots (I didnt press any key to boot from cd) let it boot up and blue screen again. when it starts there is no bios beep either which I find strange and is probably where the problem lies!!! Any idea? |

Re: new MB windows problem
It may be a memory issue, have you tried running memtest (Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool) to be sure. Download the bootable iso, burn it to disk and then boot from it and let it run for a while. If you have no problems the issue is elsewhere.

Re: new MB windows problem
I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my computer and replaced the mother board and processor etc. It turned out to be one of the RAM modules.
I tried and fixed the problem by the elimination method of removing one module at a time and restarting after each change. The blue screen of death is very intimidating. ![]() Brian |

Re: new MB windows problem
Can you still get into the BIOS at startup? Be worth setting to Defaults. Could be anything, TBH. What VGA?, sound are you using? On Mobo?

Re: new MB windows problem
Is the mobo an EXACT replacement for the old one? If not there is a chance that's your problem. Windows can be a bit of a 'tard with replacing core hardware like that.
If I replace a mobo for myself or clients I usually CLEAN reinstall Windows. EDIT: Might also be worth checking temperatures in the bios (PC Health section). If you've not mounted the heatsink or used too much/too little thermal paste it may be overheating. The bios will run your proc @ 100% but give it about 5 - 10 mins to fully warm up. |

Re: new MB windows problem
If all else fails, you could download the Ubuntu Linux Live CD version, burn an ISO image to CD and boot from that. You don't have to install anything - it runs from the CD and won't change anything on your PC, but it may show whether this is a hardware or a Windows problem. That's assuming you have another machine to download the image - if not I can send you a CD.
Get Ubuntu - Download, request a CD, or buy on CD/DVD | Ubuntu |

Re: new MB windows problem
cheers all for your help so far,
took out the existing hdrive and put in an old one, did a clean install of xp pro, as soon as it fired up hurrah. put old drive into caddy and got access to important files etc, hurrah again, went online to get updates for windows, fine, downloaded firefox with tool kit windows rebooted then the screen went black, things still whirring and clicking away green light on monitor but just a black screen, so trying another repair on the new version of xp before launching it out of the window. |

Re: new MB windows problem
ok that seems to have worked..... so far, installing all the updates at the moment hoping I do not get infected whilst this is going on.
If this does work is there anyway I can repair my old copy of windows on the other harddisk that is currently sat in a caddy as another drive on the system without formatting it as I have lots of progs and settings etc that will take an age to re-download and setup again? |

Re: new MB windows problem
You "should" be able to boot the old install in safe mode. If you can, go into the device manager and delete all the old hardware - should show old and new stuff. i.e. everything your windows has ever seen.
Deleting the hardware in device manager won't remove the drivers but it will stop the OS from attempting to load them. You can try to "uninstall" the hardware which is supposed to remove the drivers however I've never found it to actually work that well. |

Re: new MB windows problem
Can you not add the old hard drive into the pc as a slave of the new one to allow access and transfer the files across that way?
Depending on if its IDE or SATA it may be just a case of connecting it up inline, after that you should still be able to boot into windows off your new hd and then access the data from the old to copy across. |
