PSU Advice
Recently when I power my PC up there is a crackling sound around where the power cable goes in to my PSU which has got worse and starts to cut out.
I suspect its on its way out or has a faulty connection so any recommendations for a good reliable PSU ? PC Spec; AMD 64 3700+ 2046MB Radeon X1950 AGP I may just disappear at anytime as it cut out once this morning before I could type this

Re: PSU Advice
Sounds like your mains lead isn't fully seated rather that your power supply.
If you do look for a new PSU go for a 450 or 500w and as a suggestion a coolermaster psu.

Re: PSU Advice
Cheers Chris.
It looks like the lead has to be in a certain position.....at the moment slightly pulled out. |

Re: PSU Advice
Try another power lead - like swapping over monitor with the system lead. They're meant to be the same, having generic kettle-type plug fittings, but there're subtle differences which means some fit better than others. You might also try shaving off the end of the plastic (to reveal more of the pins) - probably a good idea to pull the plug out first! Otherwise.....

Re: PSU Advice
Yes I've tried a different lead Mark........same result.
I'm still here so far but I dare not wiggle the lead at the moment or I will probably be gone ![]() So both Chris and yourself reckon it's the connection? |

Re: PSU Advice
Definitely the connection - PSU will be OK but won't be happy with a poor connection - it will fail eventually with the constant arcing. As I say, try shaving the end off the power lead (it allows more of the pins to be connected). You may need to clean any oxidation off the PSU pins as well (use sandpaper/file)
