puter probs

computer is playing up......... switched it on today after work and the right click wouldnt work, could only access things that had shortcuts on desk top. couldnt get any web pages up....... computer been making a strange noise of late..... did a anti virus and adware scan all ok......... did a system restore .... didint fix the problem............. did a disk check and set it to fix and it "seems " to be ok now although still noisy......... any ideas? is it hard disk or mobo? or something else. its not overheating etc as i have two fans as well as an exhaust fan........ at one point one of the usb's ceased to work........

if i suddenly seem absent for a while its cos it has given up the ghost and at the moment if it does it will have to stay broke!

Re: puter probs

Hard luck Fiona With the right click...have you tried a different mouse? Secondly, noise means moving parts which could be hard drive, fans or PSU fan. The fact that you had to do a diskcheck suggests, only suggests, that the HDD is on it's way out. How many drives have you got. Can you try installing the OS to a different drive?

Either way, just in case it is the HDD I would back up any data photos etc that you have on that drive. Good luck.

Re: puter probs

Another thing that might be worth considering is the build up of dust inside or on the fans themselves, this would restrict the airflow and make everything work harder and become hotter.

Some or the more modern PC's (last few years) have speed controls built in so that the fans speed up if more cooling is needed, that could explain the extra noise?

It may be worth giving it a good dust off inside (please unplug it first though )

I had that problem, couldn't work out why the thing was getting noisier, eventually I opened it up and blew all the dust out with an air can (ensure it's the sort that don't leave propellant everywhere). It's been fine since, only thing is I wish I'd done it outside as it made a helluva mess, dust everywhere.

Re: puter probs

Look guys n gals, I like to think I am pretty good on photographic terminology and can usually explain stuff and even on computers I am pretty savvy in that I can do most routine stuff, make websites, add peripherals, all that stuff...

BU WHAT THE HECK IS THE MOBO?

I keep hearing the term being used but can't figure out what it is. I know it isn't Music Of Black Origin but that is the only MOBO I have ever heard of!

So come on someone, be nice to me. WHAT IS IT? The only thing computer-wise that seems to start with those letters is the MotherBoard but in the discussion about noise, a motherboard doesn't usually make any other than the things attached to it like heatsink fans.

I don't have much hair left to lose so come on, spill the mobos!

Cheers,
Rob

Re: puter probs

You're right MOBO is motherboard, you're also right any fault that would result in the motherboard itself making a noise would be a very strange thing indeed.

Re: puter probs

well have cleaned all the fans changed the onboard battery. and its still making strange noises and the cpu fan speed is erratic, dropping from 4500 to 1300 so i think we can assume at the moment that its the cpu fan. will try and get a new one over the next few days and see if that makes any difference!

Thanx for all the suggestions

If you want, I can come and take a look at your system. You're slightly outside my normal coverage area, but I don't mind for a pixaloette

you can pm me to swap contact details if you are interested.
