Rebuild of main Rig

After weeks of trying to suss why shots that look perfect on Photoshop, suddenly become darker when saving as JPEG's, I've given up & gone for a complete re-install of Windows

I may be gone a while

Are you sticking with XP or giving Vista a try?

Dave gave Linux a try after falling, sorry, taking your advice.
I think he got as far as the wireless drivers and then gave up and went back to Windows

Re: Rebuild of main Rig

Wireless? I chucked out my wireless when it stopped receiving Radio Luxembourg.

Nah... Linux works fine on some hardware on not on others. Wi-fi worked straight away on my laptop, as did video drivers and everything else, but other people aren't so lucky. It's worth trying again with the next version of Ubuntu (Hardy Heron) which comes out next month. But... that doesn't help you run Windows software unless you run a virtual machine, and that rather defeats the object.

Which is why, with great reluctance, I'm thinking of getting an iMac when the new ones come out in June.

Re: Rebuild of main Rig

Just building a new PC myself - waiting on the last few bits arriving and I can get cracking.

I've got XP64 which I'll try - although I've heard many horror stories about drivers.

I've also downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 (AMD64) which I'll also give a stab - Ubuntu HATES my current PC which is pretty old now - something to do with ATi, open source drivers, an arse, an elbow and a map - so I'm not really expecting it to be that comfortable with my new one, but you never know - hope springs eternal.

Failing all of that it's back to my trusty Windows 2000 which just... works.

And Vista?

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

See, there really is no reason. Why should people keep having to 'try' new versions of Linux when Windows just works (well XP does)? Its a mute argument Silky and a waste of peoples time to keep going back, downloading and then installing and then deleteing as they still don't 'work'

Despite everyone's comments on Vista, I have it on my desktop and have not experienced a single problem

You don't have to waste your time if you don't want to, any more than you have to waste your time dealing with viruses and re-installs of Windows. Like I say, for some people (including me and a few million others) it works straight out of the box, with no going back at all.

They're not saying what will change, except an 'upgraded spec'. The main thing that puts me off the current iMac is the glossy screen - I have one of those on my laptop and don't much care for it, so I hope they'll give the option of a non-reflective screen.

Yes - it was one of the few times when I bought something that was upgraded within weeks and I was happy as the screen on mine is stunning
