Yahoo Messenger update may affect Internet Explorer stability

It's reported that the recent Yahoo Messenger 8.1, released yesterday, automatically installs a Yahoo Mail icon in a user's system tray and changes the user's default mail settings to Yahoo Mail; for some people running Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6.0, Yahoo's changes will crash the browser application.

Some 73 million users worldwide use Yahoo Messenger. The application has no reported vulnerabilities, but its behaviour in changing user settings unbidden is being criticised.
