yellow monitor tinge

hi all...

got a wee problem with my monitor, the colour graduall changes from white to a kind of dirty yellow tinge... have done a search in the internet with various different causes,..... all with the same recommendation........ give it a good thump............ doesnt happen all the time and nothing has been bumped or moved etc to dislodge cables etc,
have degaussed it with no difference......... any ideas other than telling me the monitor is goosed and i need a new one?
and dont say dont smoke near the monotior cos i dont smoke indoors at all! lol

Re: yellow monitor tinge

Do you have anything with magnets in near the monitor? Speakers are the usual culprits

Re: yellow monitor tinge

..... or maybe a poor connection (check the cables and push 'em around when it happens next) or maybe a dry solder joint inside the casing (about which you can do little unless you want to try and find it - not necessarily recommended as a course of action!)

Just what I was going to suggest... allthough that problem normally appears as a green tinge at the sides of the screen near to where the speaker is situated.

Re: yellow monitor tinge

now thats very strange.......... i replied about the speakers and it has disappeared........ hmmmmmmmmmm

okies the cables will have to wait cos i cant actually reach them! lol speakers.. one is about 10 inches away and the other is a couple feet, but i rarely have the speakers on as the computer is in the living room and when the volume is on it competes with the tele

Re: yellow monitor tinge

If there are no magnets as Steve suggested, and you've wiggled all the cables as Mark suggested, and you've tried thumping it as you suggested, then I'd have to suggest that it's probably goo.... er.... a turkey.

P.S. Doesn't matter if the speakers are on or off - it's the permanent magnets in them that cause the problem.

Re: yellow monitor tinge

Fiona , Here are a few suggestions what the fault may be.
Have you got anything near the monitor that is fed with 240volt mains. If so there could well be a mains transformer that radiates a magnetic field that would give a poor purity to your monitor but this would not give an overall yellow just patches.
By the way, I gather it is a CRT monitor?. LCD's would not be affected by stray magnetic fields.

A common fault in the monitor is the deguasing circuit becoming faulty and intermittent.

Is the White to yellow over the whole of the screen? and is it worse when you first switch on and improves with time? if so it could be a fault in the blue gun of the tube, the blue circuits in the monitor .It could also be any leads or processing in the Blue signal from the computer to the monitor.
I hope this helps.
Regards Brian

Re: yellow monitor tinge

okies... the whole screen goes yellow, there doesnt seem to be any rhythm to it just random... white then yellow then flicks to white then could stay white or go yellow.....

its working fine now no flickering to yellow but was quite bad earlier....... as to 240 volts, well its surrounded by computers and printers and external hard drives......

have degaused the monitor already that makes no difference........... as long as its not the graphics in the pc itself.

Re: yellow monitor tinge

Its always difficult to tell for sure just from descriptions of faults but I would now say that you are probably at the point of needing a new monitor. If possible I would ask around your friends and relatives to see if any of them have an old one that is not used much and if they would be willing to lend it to you for a couple of days so that you can test.

You'll then know whether its the monitor for sure and if so, be able to make a decision to replace it knowing that there is no chance of it being good.

This is the best suggestion from Steve and with no cost. Also the monitor if you can borrow one will have its own lead so you would have replaced everything from the Grafx card. If the faults still there go for the Grafx Card.

You should still be able to add one to the motherboard without too much trouble... probably a good bit cheaper than a monitor too.
