LOL. But the thing is, it came with the flash, but does it do the same job?

Re: Gary Fong Rip offs at 20% the cost ?

yes. it's a sto-fen diffuser (or a copy)

it's not quite the same as the pudding bowl as it still requires a white ceiling if you want to bounce the flash (and avoid a colour cast) but as far as diffusing the light goes it's 6 and 2x3 - maybe.

The way the pudding bowl works gives light as a sort of lightbulb effect - i.e. all round the flashgun.. the sto-fen on the other hand is pretty much restricted to the direction the flash head is pointing - ish.

I've got both. no idea why. hate using flash. can't work it. read the manual 6 bloody times and i still can't work the damn thing.

Cool! Thanks for thee info OP, dunno about you, but my SB800 has been relatively simple to use for immediate effects, I haven't got into the really technical stuff yet, but I've done things like multi flashes with rolling balls, making a weird multi-exposure look, which is fun Perhaps the 600 isn't so friendly

Well I bought one of the rip offs as I've been contemplating getting a genuine one in the past and thought for the price had nothing to lose.
Only tried it briefly last night but I must say I'm impressed. The background shadow on a portrait all but vanished.

4) Widens the light path. (this and the diffusing is the bit that softens the shadows)

While the orientation of the device probably isn't that important, you will probably get best results by having the dome parallel with the ceiling.
I agree, the dome never comes off mine. It helps to throw some of the diffused light forward. I've used mine quite extensively now at weddings and other shoots and came to the same conclusion as Orangepeel after a lot of trial and error.

Have a look at the Gary Fong website for some good advice on how to use it.
