is certainly an improvement in terms of IQ and optical stabilization over my two ex Canon 100-400mm IS L zooms

I'll stick with my 100-400 L IS USM

not knocking Sigma but I reckon they are on happy pills

That's funny - I know the seller - top guy, and I'm surprised he's selling this - but yes, he has had a couple of 100-400s.

Sigma on happy pills? lol - not heard that one before .

A bit disparaging given that the seller has actually shot with both lenses. The 100-400 is an excellent lens with a well deserved reputation. There are some good reasons why this could be the case. It's a much newer lens with the latest technology and next gen OS so 4 stops on the Sigma vs 2 stops on the Canon. The Canon is a 4 times zoom this is a 3 times zoom and it has a maximum aperture of 6.3. IQ is hard to judge but at 500mm it's MTF charts (Not the be all and end all) are slightly better than the Canon at 400mm.

To be honest, I doubt it would bother condyk too much. He's one of a rare breed who buys and judges his kit completely on its merits, and his needs, and whether or not it's an L or 1 series, or whatever doesn't bother him in the slightest. I haven't yet reached that point of gear zen, though am on my way there .
