Bowens 500 R heads and umbrellas

Ive just got hold of some hardy used Bowens 500r units all in the case light stands softboxes pulsar trigger , however the umbrellas also inc dont attach to the reflectors even thou they and the reflectors are genuine Bowens I also had a beauty dish and the barn doors and snoot with it as well. Any suggestions on the umbrella mounting issue. Got it setup in a spare room at moment.

do you not have to take the reflectors off to attach the brollys or is there not a hole in the reflector that the brolly arm slides through?
and do the snoot and barn doors etc all fit onto the lights cos i pretty sure you need to take the reflectors off to use them

Re: Bowens 500 R heads and umbrellas

The umbrella fitting should be under the body of the light and there ought to be a hole in the reflector that should be mounted so it is at the bottom when it is locked on. Then the brolly shaft slides through the hole and engages in the mount under the body.

As Fiona says you can use a brolly without a reflector but you would have to have it very close to the light to prevent spill. This is more important if you are shooting through the brolly, but even when firing away from the subject light spill is best avoided. With a reflector you get more options as you can move the brolly away from or towards the light to give a greater or lesser spread. If your reflectors don't have a hole in them it is very easy to drill a slot to take the brolly shaft. Put it into the light from the back to mark the position for the slot in the reflector.
