Re: flash for camera

Sound like it is not compatible with your camera. If the pins don't align with the contacts on the hotshoe it won't fire. When you handled it you have probably pressed the test or fire button.

Re: flash for camera

Just searched this flash on Google and some people are reporting some issues with this flashgun. Seems that it might need alkaline batteries so that you are getting a full 6 volts. If you are using rechargeable batteries they will not give 6 volts. Worth a try.

Re: flash for camera

Does not seem to be a battery issue then. If you Google the flashgun you will see what issues people have been having with it.

Re: flash for camera

DID THE SHOP WHERE YOU BOUGHT THE CAMERA AND FLASH, TELL YOU THAT THEY WERE COMPATIBLE?
I WOULD TAKE THEM BACK TO THE SHOP AND GET THEM TO CHECK THE CAMERA AND FLASH.

Re: flash for camera

Sadly Tigerbarb my searches have revealed the likely problem ...

The Vivitar sf-4000 flash is a slave unit - meant to be fired as a response to a flash from another unit. You will be able to fire it as a secondary/slave flash from the flash emitted by the pop-up flash on the camera but not with the SF-4000 mounted on the camera itself (A weird design IMHO). A brief check will confirm if it has any contacts on the shoe. There should be at least one central metal contact that will line up with your finepix S9600, which has only one contact. The HS30EXR would benefit from using a dedicated flash unit as it has multiple contacts, but should still fire a flash with one contact.

I also thought this initially, but in an illustration of this unit I saw a contact on the bottom of the foot that fits into the hotshoe, making me think that the description might be wrong. Of course, now I can't find that picture! In the spec is says that it has an optical trigger built-in, but the presence of a contact on the base should indicate that the camera can fire it, albeit in manual mode only.

Very confusing though, and I think that you are right Graham.

As far as I know Vivitar as we knew it went bust many years ago and it seems that someone has bought the name and is putting it on (probably) Chinese made generic flashguns.

Tigerbarb - are there any contacts on the base of the flash? if not Graham is right. If there are no contacts, see if it will fire if you use your pop-up flash to trigger it, making sure the window on the flash where the optical trigger is located is visible to the camera flash.

Re: flash for camera

Hi Graham
The flash has one metal pin on the bottom of the flash when I push into the hot shoe it lifts up into the flash then I tighten it up, I will try again in manual mode only.

Thought I'd seen a pin in one of the images I saw. Good idea to try it in manual mode. Try around 1/60 to 1/100 at f5.6 to start with with ISO 100. Let us know how you get on.

Re: flash for camera

Hi Graham
My grand son has help me out today, brought me some fully charge batteries to see if that was the problem but it was not, the problem was after setting the flash as you said, it still didn't work until he went through all the programs and found on the (p) program we manage to get the external flash setting on and bingo it worked.
The finepix s9600 +flash vivitor sf 4000 and FG30D Flash worked on it, and on the finepix HS30EXR camera only the FG30D flash worked on it .
The other thing I found out was to use a daimon long life battery 996 4r25 6volt on the flash which is a lot cheaper get and use as I was told that you can take about 400 flashers with-it thank you for you help, Bert.
