Lightbulb Help with studio Light setup needed

Hi, Photography has till date just been a hobby and a passion. I'm currently doing a course through The Photography Institute, and realy want to take this a step further. I have a Canon 400D with a efs 18-55 and Tamaron af 70-300mm lens. I have 2 Visico excel 300 VC plus Flash Units, 2 Soft Box, 1 translucent white umbrella and on black and silver umbrella. I have been playing around with it but I really battle to get good shots, they are mostly under exposed. I shoot in RAW at a 100 ISO and different aperture and shutter speeds (not sure what the light settings should be) the room I am using a room with no natural light, walls, ceiling and floor are white, any advice on setup will be appreciated. And what lens would be the best for portrait photography.

Re: Help with studio Light setup needed

I presume that you are shooting in manual mode.

The lighting set up will depend on what you are trying to achieve. A good basic one is to have your lights on each side of the camera at about 45 degrees to the camera and have one as the key light and the other as the fill, around 1.5 stops under the key light.

However you do need to change your camera settings depending on the results you get. I often have f8 indicated on a flash meter and actually end up shooting at f11 - 14. The histogram will tell you which way to go and shooting a grey card on every lighting change will also help a lot.

Start off using f8 at 1/80 - 1/1/100th and go from there. The power of your lights will dictate to a certain amount what the starting settings will be. Try the key light at around half power to start with.

Re: Help with studio Light setup needed

try just setting your camera to an average aperture. use ISO 100 as you have been and set a shutter speed just below your cameras sync speed. then adjust your light outputs one by one until you get the desired light from that source. do this for each light until you find a setup that suits your need. i often dont use a light meter as i find it doesn't give me the look i want. i simply just experiment until i get the look i want.
you should consider getting another light to add power if you find your lights aren't cutting the butter. perhaps add a background light to add separation to the subject

Re: Help with studio Light setup needed

i usually shoot in a studio at roughtly f8 and 125/s shutter or there abouts as said the set up is much dependant on what you are shooting , what effect you are going etc as there are numerous lighting set ups for different things.... learning how your light works and about light fall off and how it travels , where to put your model how far away frpom backgrounds and lights etc etc is all needed not just a set up .

Without meaning to sound negative, why do people bring up a thread that's two years old. Surely the OP will have solved her problem by now.
