I do not want at the moment to use speedlite as a slave!

I want to use my 430 ex ii on my Canon 7D mk ii, is it possible to disable my pop up flash?, whilst I shoot with my 430 exii mounted on the camera.

Not a Canon user, but I would have thought that when the flash is mounted on the hotshoe the pop-up is not used.

Cheers for the input, it seems that the pop up flash is used for triggering any slave unit ie 430 ex 11, but if something is mounted on to the hot shoe, the pop up is over ridden, that would suit my purpose, is that the case?

Just stick the Flash Unit on the camera's hot shoe and then press the shutter button.

Re: I do not want at the moment to use speedlite as a slave!

I can confirm that is the normal way for Canon cameras and their dedicated flash guns to work. If attached by the hot shoe then the pop up flash will not be triggered.

You could also use it on the hotshoe in manual mode, but check out the trigger voltage matches or is under the camera tolerance FIRST

Re: I do not want at the moment to use speedlite as a slave!

As Dabhand said, CHECK THE TRIGGER VOLTAGE of the Vivitar or you could end up "frying" the cameras circuitry if using it on the hot shoe.
I would also advise reading the camera and flash user manuals to set the Canon flash up, (second curtain, speed etc.). I have 2 430 EX 11s as slaves used in conjunction with 580 11 as master.
Flash can be quite an involved subject and needs practice to get right, have fun.

Re: I do not want at the moment to use speedlite as a slave!

If you want to use the 430ex as a slave off the camera - then when using the wireless trigger from the camera (Built in to the camera on your 7d mkii) - the pop up flash always comes up and fires to trigger the slave. You can only get it to prefire if you use advanced wireless settings.

Re: I do not want at the moment to use speedlite as a slave!

Thanks to you all for the informative input, will certainly checkout the circuitry on the Vivitar (name from the past), I purchased it some time ago to use on my Pentax Spotmatic SPII, but never used it, bought the EOS 600 RT, then digital come on the scene so bought Canon 10D, later purchased 50D, the other day 7D mkii, never full came to terms with flash, so will give this some serious attention. Once again cheers.

Pretty much all makes of DSLRs will disable the pop up if mounted on the hot shoe
