John Farrar Workshop Review

ok here goes
One day Work shop with John Farrar.

Little bit about John.

John has been a photographer all his life with over 41 years experience in the beauty, fashion and travel industry, He is a full time photographer with his own studio in Brighton.
Known as the Brightonian on Model Mayhem he has won the MM photographer of the year in 2011 and 2012, and is well known and respected throughout the photography world.
He is a no nonsense kind of guy who says things as he sees it but manages to do it in a way of not upsetting too many people( although i was introduced to the terms tittage and boobage a fair bit).

The Workshop
The workshop was help in a very informal way without too much actual structure or keeping to time, the models volunteer and get images from John for their portfolio in exchange but he vets them first and has a VERY high expectation ( he knocked back at least 15 applicants), the same with the MUA he vets their portfolios before accepting them on the course.

The day started out with an informal chat about lighting and how we set it up, there is a lot of chat and he doesn't just go in and set them up its more a discussion and he asks if we think that would work or this would work a lot and then goes on to tell us no it wouldnt and why, but he will also say if we are right.

There where two different lighting set ups used, 5 lights on both

We where asked to bring along as many wild and wacky props etc as we could think about baring in mind most of the shots are upper body and head shots so nothing too big, but this is where i thoroughly enjoyed myself, putting together things that are not meant to be used the way we used them knickers round necks to double as chokers for example....,
There was a lot of sitting watching him shoot and watch how he directed and spoke to the models; and then going over histograms etc to see what and how he could improve it,
we were then let loose abuthe didn't guide us and pretty much left us to our own shots expecting us to use what we had watched ,listened to previously to get the shots we wanted, which i thought was great cos then we didn't have exact copies of his shots.

He did come and have a look at the back of our cameras every so often if he saw a pose he liked to see how we captured it and then helped to correct it to get it perfect, He doesn't mind if all the technicalities are not perfect at times as long as the image is worth looking at it works he says. so may not be for camera club competitions as the judges like technical perfection!

in between times we chatted about post processing and what he used and what he did and didint like , viewing his work on an ipad and going over individual previous images and tell and explaining how he had got to the final image.

It was a very busy day starting at 10 and we finished at about 7.45pm using 4 models with two looks each and two Make up Artists.

All in all it was fun relaxed and informal,, hard work as we ate on the hoof with no formal breaks either.. If you want a structured course and have delicate sensibilities this is definitely NOT for you, however if you learn in a relaxed environment with a hands on approach this would be right up your street.

Highly recommended by both of us.

Re: John Farrar Workshop Review

Sounds a great course from someone who's obviously excellent at running one - and the proof shows in both your pics and your commentary

I would be interested if I liked studio (I don't and avoid it - although I have lights, but only for friends/family) or I ever considered courses (I don't as I prefer experience, feedback and internet info)
