Re: Spanish shoot

Did not realise that you had a 35mm f1.8 and yes syncing flash in daylight can cause issues as you have found. Your camera also won't go under ISO200 which does not help.

The longer the focal length of the lens, the narrower the depth of field at any given aperture, so for instance an 85mm f1.8 will have a narrower DoF than your 35mm f1.8 and longer focal lengths will, as you have found, also have narrower DoF even at smaller apertures. While you would not have any distance problems in the open, long lenses do put a lot of distance between you and your subject.

Meant to say that I like this one, and if she enjoyed the session this is a bonus as she will be amenable to future shoots.

If Elements has layers the easiest way is to duplicate the layer (CTRL+J) and add gausian blur to your preferred level. Try about 10 and view at full size to see the effect. Then use a layer mask on the blurred layer by clicking on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the pallete (icon is rectangle with a circle in it in PS). The mask will appear next to the picture thumbnail in the layer stack and it will be white, click in the mask in the layer stack and select the paintbrush. The size and softness you will have to vary as you use it, but set the opacity at 100%. Now press the D key to set the colours to default and the X key to switch the foreground colour to black. Enlarge your image and start to paint over the bits that you want to be sharp. If you make an error press the X key to change the colour to white and paint out your error. Press x again to carry on.

When you have done you have options. 1 Save the file as it is in psd or tiff formats and you will be able to open it later and re-work it if you want. 2 If you are happy flatten the image via the layers menu or by using the small arrow at the top of the layer pallete to give you a drop down>flatten image. Doing this and saving it will mean there is no opportunity to go back and do more editing. 3 Belt and braces. Save as a psd or tiff with the layers intact and also then flatten the image and save as a jpg.

Like this

Very quick - about 3 or 4 mins. You will be able to do it better with a full res image and more time.

Edit - put the original here too for comparison

Re: Spanish shoot

Thanks Graham for the explanation taking the time to edit
Like the one you picked to edit. Looks better with a lot of blurr

Great minds.
I am playing with the graduated layer so the focus reduces as it goes back but need
To create a mask of the girl and table first.
I tried to rub through but found if I made a mistake putting blurr back in was more blurred than the gradient.

Going to pick a good shot and spend a stupid amount of time getting it right.
She's handed her textile coursework in now so no rush.

Also lost the pen for my bamboo pad so doing it with touchpad on laptop so
A bit ham fisted

Did you use the eraser tool for this? Very crude and can't be undone easily other than using the history pallete or brush. Layer mask gives much better control. You don't have the make a mask first. This method does it as you go along and you can easily correct any mistakes.

If you want to graduate the blur it makes it even easier to use the layer mask. All you need to do to get the grad effect is to dupe the layer, blur it as above and add the mask. Then select the paintbrush, press D then X and set opacity at 100%. Just paint side to side going up the image to reveal the sharp one underneath and then gradually reduce the opacity to increase the blur as you want. If you want the BG to start blurring behind the model you can use a combination of this method and the first one to keep her sharp while gradually blurring the BG.

Re: Spanish shoot

Ye that's what I was doing. If you draw the line from bottom to the top of the steps By the time it's gone back it's at full blurr.

What I am going to do also is create a mask of the girl and table. That way I can play to my hearts content
Without effecting inside the mask.
