Spanish shoot

A friends daughter has asked me if I can photograph her
Collage textile assignment. She is designing a modern spanish
Dress.

My plan was to have my daughter dresses in a flamenco outfit
From a show she did in the background out of focus using DOF and
Shot in a local tapas bar with the model in the main dress
At the front.

The question I have is

Can you have silhouette in the same photo as a non silhouette without photo shop.

I though it could shine a lamp with a jell on at my daughter with a sheet of material pinned to the door to Give her outline but frightened the flash in the min subject may bleach the silhouette.

This is all a massive learning curve

I have at the moment
Sb700
Umberella shoot through defuser
Small reflector but getting a big one.

I know I need more flashes but sure I can do something with what i have.

May do this in a studio but not sure as want the ambience of the restraint.

Re: Spanish shoot

The only way you are going to get a silhouette is by having the BG about 2 stops or more higher than the person providing the shape. You could achieve this by use of a diffuser (sheet) lit from behind with desk/table/other lamps. Or, if there is a window and the light is bright outside perhaps this could be the light source. Alternatively, maybe someone casting a shadow onto the diffuser panel/sheet will have the same effect.

Then there is the issue of the main subject. If you use the flash off camera so you can control where the light goes better - independent of the camera angle - the light from it can be controlled by a reflector/softbox with a flag to prevent light spill onto your silhouette provider or use a snoot (mine were made from a cornflake packet painted with blackboard paint on the inside) or maybe a grid to keep the light where you want it.

I guess that you could use a tripod and take 2 or more shots of the BG and main subject separately and blend them. if you do try this remember that balancing the light will be the issue so bracket the shots well.

All of this can be practised at home. You don't want to be starting from scratch at the venue.

Re: Spanish shoot

Thanks graham. These were my thoughts too
Just concerned about the bleed from the flash but as you say soft box or snoot
A good option to restrain the light.

Got a month and a lot practicing to do.
I have an off flash cable and some theatrical spots.
I think I have an understanding of balancing ambient and flash light but need practice.

Just need to know my flash settings a bit more.
Will be doing some test shots at home with both daughters before going to restaurant.
First model shoot so a bit scared.lol

Re: Spanish shoot

If I was you if you are going to try to get it all done at the same time I'd use the SB700 on manual and a cheap radio trigger will give you better positioning options. This will give you total control over the light.

I don't think that you will need a grid or a gridded snoot, but a couple of snoots with different lengths and a selection of flags will be handy. I use cheap e-bay light stands and flash mount heads but a tripod could act as a light stand for you.

Re: Spanish shoot

To help calculate your lighting needs use the back of your flash gun. This may sound obvious but it's a nice easy accessible piece of kit, and remembering that the light fall off is 1/(d squared) is not as easy as looking at the back of the flashgun and using 1 stop = 1/2 or double the light. So as Graham suggests you need 2 stops less for your silhouette, then how much further away do you need her to be in order to have 2 stops less than your subject's frontal light. Set your flash to M 1/1, and set the aperture you want for the main object and read the distance, now set the aperture to half that (e.g. 1st=f/8 2nd=f/4) and read the distance again. In this case it is easy you just need to place the silhouette at double the distance of the main subject, but at other times it is a fairly quick reckoner for calculating light fall off and where to place objects. Obviously you will need to choose your lens focal length accordingly in order to get the right balance in size of your subject and silhouette. Probably upwards of 85mm may be required to get the balance of size of subject and silhouette and light fall off between the two. Just a bit of juggling with numbers.

Don't forget you have 2 flashguns, one in camera as well as your SB700. You can use the camera in command mode to control the settings of and fire the SB700, but your model might find the preflash from the camera disturbing and close her eyes. If so this is not an option and using a separate trigger is necessary as suggested by Graham.

Ambient light shots are always great but a lot more difficult when trying to balance the colour of a fill in flash. You will have gels for the SB700 to balance fluorescent or tungsten, but sadly not for the flash on camera. Keeping the WB of all flashes (borrow an extra one if possible) is important when trying to get an ambient looking shot, unless the main lighting is daylight though . Although you will be working with RAW files, set the correct (or best) WB in the camera before you start. Having established the WB don't change it between shots or you will end up with the same problem as using auto WB. It just makes it easier to pin the WB in PP, because you know what you used for the shots.

Re: Spanish shoot

I suggested using the wireless trigger as I'm pretty sure that your camera does not have commander mode for the SB700. Was the SB700 supplied with gels for balancing with incandescent or fluorescent light?

Re: Spanish shoot

Whoops, I missed that about the D5100 . Indeed you cannot use commander mode, although you can fire flashes remotely but you cannot control them with respect to the ratio of light that is output by the on-camera flash, so yes a wireless trigger gets you the best solution.

According to my book the SB700 series are supplied with the basic fluorescent and incandescent filters - it was a compatibility feature that I looked at when buying my second system flash mainly looking at the SB700 for size and portability but I just couldn't ignore the extra flexibility of the SB910.

Re: Spanish shoot

Test run tomorrow if the rain holds off.
Simplifying everything.

Will be shot in western park grounds and using DOF to blur out the dancer and possible guitarist
And have the model posed at a table with props.
May strip back if detracts from the dress. Want it to stand out but not be all about the dress if that makes sense.

Tomorrow will just be checking venue and working out the lighting but will give me an
Idea of what I can achieve. Will be a bit of fun too.

Re: Spanish shoot

you could use a gridded soft box as a soft box will allow the light to spread more while the grids will make it more directional barn doors are also an idea, but basically anything that will flag th light from hitting the subject you dont want it to hit.

Re: Spanish shoot

This was from
A practice shoot today
Its black and white but will stick some colour on. Started 1/1 1/4 etc.
Had to use flash cable as not got wireless yet. Tried to us the flash sync thing
But poping up the flash limits the shutter to 200.
Learnt a few things. Got a bit lost with the settings so experimented.
Need to read up a bit on some of your comments as realised trying to
Use them I had a bit of a knowledge issue.

Bare in mind I have never done a model shoot at all. Just started using the sb700 for something and just bought a umbarella defuser.
This is as far as my budget will take me.
Equipment
D5100
50mm 1.8 prime
70-300 Zoom
18-55 kit lens
Umberella defuser
Tripod for flash connected to flash lead and umbarella gaffa taped on.

Were talking very low budget.
What I found was even with this really basic kit I was getting good results.

So roll on next time.
Trying to find money for radio triggers as I think this is a stumbling block.

Thanks for the info guys

Re: Spanish shoot

Good that you are happy with what you shot on this day. You can't practice enough!

If you want some radio triggers the Yong Nuo RF 602 are great value and you can get various combinations of triggers and receivers. I got a 1 x trigger and 4 x receivers for about 62 a while ago, but the 1 x trigger and either 1 or 2 receivers will be a lot cheaper. I think that the 1 trigger and 1 receiver starts from about 12.50

and I'm not sure that you have given the dress enough emphasis. The pictures have the flavour that you wanted and planned, and they have some atmosphere - but to sell the dress I think there should be full length pictures of her standing up showing the front, back and both sides, interspersed with the shots you have posted to add some variation. She could be stood looking at something, leaning against a wall, the bandstand or a tree shot from differing sides and angles - all with the supporting cast in the shot adding their atmosphere.

Tricky in the bandstand, but in the first one of the last set the guitar man is hidden by the railings and to a lesser extent so is your daughter. Not meant as a criticism - just an observation.

Like the mono one

Re: Spanish shoot

These are a few of 200+ photos
back, front, closeup, sat in chair, just legs crossed and shoulder etc etc.
I also did one of the photo scatter things with different angles.

A wall shot was the next to photos i was going to put on. but think i reached my limit for today.

I intended the dancer to be blurred out but couldn't get the dof. trying to fake it at the mo with elements.
i have one of the guitarist but her expression inst as good

Re: Spanish shoot

Did not think that you had no full length pictures really!

Control of the depth of field is easiest with a fast lens. The Nikkor 50mm f1.8D is fantastic value, but won't AF on your body.

Nikon 50mm f1.8D AF Nikkor Lens - Lenses - Harrison Cameras

Nikon Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 D - Digitalrev

You would need the G model with the built-in motor, but they are dearer.

Camera Lenses :: Nikon :: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 G Lens - Onestop Digital

Re: Spanish shoot

For some shots I was using the nikon 35mm 1.8 giving me 55mm on my crop.
I also found my 70-300 was giving me better DOF shooting from a distance with
The aperture wide open.

What I was fighting, was flash sink.
To use the sun behind and the flash in front as a fill flash also getting DOF
Cause problems I was expecting.

Due to flash sink I couldn't use the shutter over 1/250 and the aperture 1.8
Giving over exposed pics.
I used an nd8 to reduce the light going in.
As the sun was up and down and no light meter I
Was constantly adjusting my setting and taking the filter on and off.

It was a cool day but I felt like I had lost 2 stone in sweat.

Re: Spanish shoot

I also think the feed back from here made the day less stress full.

I went there knowing what I wanted to achieve and new I had everything I needed
To get the shots
I did forget the defuser and didn't do enough with the models expression and poses
But that is lesson learned.

Thanks
Graham
