Re: 9 days of rain ???
So you've got the rain.
UK temperatures in London this week are predicted to be around 30c degrees with a mini heatwave for most parts of the UK for the week ahead. |

Omigod! We're going to die of heatstroke, except for those of us who drown.
![]() <looks at calendar> Ah, end of June. Typical British summer weather, then. ![]()

Will you be wearing the Kilt for the rain dance Silks or is it a penny whistle and Morris dance Job. Down here I find removing the cover from the BBQ is usually enough to guarantee a cloudburst.

Re: 9 days of rain ???
Sejanus ... what exactly is UK weather? I am told, and experienced some part of it in 2005, that it is most of the time quite rainy/foggy. Is this a fact or are you guys experiencing the effects of global warming?

Fiona, you should explain to me what is Scottish weather? Unlike the UK "down South", you have lots of mountainous regions and should therefore have dryier climate, no?

Re: 9 days of rain ???
Anyway, it is day No. 4 of rain ... apparently four to five more to come. Got out after supper and .... frankly, lots of "nothing" except a very busy Brown Trasher on the go, feeding lots of earthworms to the little ones ... which I couln't see, anyway.

Re: 9 days of rain ???
We have just had light shower but still humid here.
Best make the most of this week as one long term forecast (if they are to believed) says July & August are going to be unsettled. |

Re: 9 days of rain ???
Typical UK weather:
England: Sunny intervals interspersed with rain, hail, thunderstorms and the occasional summer heatwave. Scotland: Rain interspersed with more rain, hail, midges and the occasional sunny interval. Wales: As Scotland but warmer. I think that just about sums it up.

Re: 9 days of rain ???
P-E, this weather is still very dreary over here. As to trying to make the best of it, I'M not sure whether I want to go out at all with my gear. I should maybe invest in a "raincoat" for the camera and lens.

Silksatone, thanks for the UK feedback. This resembles a lot what we have here .. usually, but this Summer has so far been a real disaster. Rain again until next Tuesday!

Re: 9 days of rain ???
Pentax buff.............. Scottish weather is a Law unto itself. unfortunately the majority of people and forecasters think that one weather symbol covers the whole of scotland.............. although a small country we can experience the full range of weather from snow in May in one part and blasting sunshine at the same time as the other...... rain aplenty...........My gran lived in the highlands and it is so unpredicatble and changeable that she used to say you " follow the sun"
Its great we get the best and worst of everything and unless u live here or spend a lot of time here u just dont appreciate........ i love our weather and its certainly not "UK" weather so whats h appeneing down in England usually doesnt apply to us here although most folk down there seems to think it does............. a bit like everything else ! lol by the way...... spent the morning yesterday shooting a charity golf match............ overcast and very warm....... and I got burnt to a crisp ! |

Re: 9 days of rain ???
Fiona: this weather of yours resembles much that of Nova Scotia in this part of the world! Maybe the Scottish settlers liked the resemblance so much that it is why they named it so!? In, Nova Scotia .... great big mountains around Cape Breton, flat lands at the Bras d'Or Lake region, ocean on one side and the Gulf of St Lawrence on the other .... and if you ask people living there if they mind the weather, they'll tell you that they wouldn't ever move away! As you said: you have to live there to appreciate it ... point well taken!
But, hey! I like to complain about the weather. ![]() JP

Re: 9 days of rain ???

![]() On a slightly more climatological note - the western side of Scotland where it is most mountainous is also where its wettest, because winds tend to be predominantly westerlies carrying relatively warm, wet weather from the Atlantic. The east is drier because the North Sea on the east coast has for the last 20-odd years been a system of persistently higher pressure than the long term average so freezing winters as happened in the 60s and 70s are very rare as the colder water and northerly winds derived from a more Arctic associated system are rebuffed by the high pressure around the UK. Basically, the US and Canadian Atlantic coasts get colder winters because the water that was warmed by the sun in the spring and summer circulates east to west before sinking so we get the rainfall but also the mild seasons

MB: There's another reason ... the UK gets the Gulf stream, we get the Labrador Stream ... quite a difference. If it were the other way around, the UK would experience weather much like Siberia! and we would have palm trees! JP |
