Air Tatoo - Fairford - Newbie requires advice
OK, I've had to swallow the £31 entrance fee, as the father in law wants to go . Good excuse for me to take the old camera out for the day. Mono planes everywhere
Any difference between Sat & Sun at this event ? Any other advice welcome, as I've never been to an airshow before. |

Re: Air Tatoo - Fairford - Newbie requires advice
Take some sun screen, I burnt like a burnt burny thing at Waddington. I don't think there will be much difference if any between the 2 days. May be worth going along a day or two before if it's not too far to get the planes coming in for the show.

Take lots of shots and expect to miss many
play the averages game and you will end up with one or two excellent shots

It might also be worth switching to large Jpg's in stead of raw to give you a faster and longer burst of shots for fly bys etc. As long as you get the metering about right this could save you loads of time and effort later during post processing too...

Good thinking Steve. I was thinking from a different angle of not wanting to process nnn RAW files

Re: Air Tatoo - Fairford - Newbie requires advice
From the following map, to shoot for the air displays (start at 10:00) is it best to be at top left of map. Just I can see the runway above & from direction of the plane icons I assume they will be taking off from right to left ? As I only have 200mm to play with on the day I was hoping planes just taking off might be my best bet ?

Re: Air Tatoo - Fairford - Newbie requires advice
Aircraft usually take off (and land) (approximately) into the wind, so the actual direction of takeoffs and landings will depend on the wind on the day - I see the Met Office is forecasting Easterly 10knt for Saturday. So if that map has the conventional North at the top, they'll probably be taking off from left to right. Unless the weather changes, or for other reasons they decide to do it differently.
Most modern high performance jets will probably only need about half the runway to become airborne, so somewhere near the middle might be the best bet. |

Re: Air Tatoo - Fairford - Newbie requires advice
Right need to get this straight in my head, as I've never shot moving targets before
The setup I will go with is Nikon D70 with Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 with following settings on camera :-- AE Shutter Priority mode shooting at around 1/500 for jets & possibly 1/320 for props - Spot metering with either +1/3 or 2/3 ev dialed in (bit of chimping on day to fine tune ) - AF-C AF (continuous) - Single area focus area, centre weighted or possibly dynamic ? - Continuous shoot mode - JPEG Fine Large mode Sound right ? With 4GB microdrive it's showing 1100 shots, so that should be enough for the day
