Anyone owned A TVR or know someone with one ?

Made the mistake of reading a copy of Top Marques that was left by my Uncle today.....he knew I would Anyway I was like a kid in a candy shop.

So anyway, one set of cars that caught my eye & seemed good value were TVR's . Now I know in the past the Chimeras & Grifiiths were not bult that well, but I just saw a 98 Cerbera with 45k miles for £12K , a 2001 Tuscan for £17K & a 2002 Tamora for £19K. Anyone any experience of these models, or know someone who owns one ? Would need to drive it say twice a week with one trip being 80 mile round trip....the other possibly 200-250 miles. Will it make it in one piece ?

Re: Anyone owned A TVR or know someone with one ?

Whilst the TVRs are lovely looking and sounding cars I would not have one. I have a few friends who've had various models and they have all reported the same 'faults':
  • Due to the fibreglass bodies there are constant electrical problems due to bad earthing, this gets significantly worse when wet
  • Build quality - not very good I'm afraid. Lots of sqeaks, rattles and bits falling off
  • Servicng costs. These are absolutely horrendous, Put a TVR in for a service and you will be looking at a bill of £700-£800 and that is before they find other faults with it (These prices are from a couple of years ago so they have probably risen since then)
  • What is happening with TVR at the moment. I'd heard they were closing down due to the Russian Nikolai Smolensky pulling out, he bought them a couple of years ago with the view to turning them around. If they do close parts might be a problem.
  • They are not easy to work on as space is limited under the bonnet due to the engine size.
  • The cars are quite 'raw'. Remember that you will not have any modern driving aids such as ABS, some people do not mind this but as it is an everyday feature of modern driving having an unexpected lock up whilst braking can have expensive consequences as one of my friends found out to his cost.

I hope this doesn't put you off as they are stunning cars but all of the above means I would not touch one with a bargepole.

They're not rich any more - the TVR took care of that.

It's called downsizing to house half the cost & size of your previous one, so you have no mortgage

I can't help thinking that owning a TVR would be a bit like owning a boat and that famous quote that accompanies boat ownership.

"You have two happy days with a boat/TVR - the day you buy it and the day you sell it"!
