Re: Back up back up back up
You sure that they're irretrieveable? If disk suffered logical failure then they may be rescueable - a physical failure is a little more of a problem

Re: Back up back up back up
Sounds like it's more logical errors, so maybe OK.
Well, Disks are pretty cheap these days so getting up and running should not be a prob |

Re: Back up back up back up
If it comes to it, you could try one of the companies that specialise in recovery of data. They might be able to clone all of your stuff onto a new drive and you could then just replace your C drive.

Re: Back up back up back up
I have a caddy built into my Pc which takes internal drives. you just drop it in and bang the thing home. then you can have a look at the contents of the drive assuming it is not a mechanical problem. If need be post it to me and I will get off what I can and burn to DVD for you.
Drop me a pm. |

Re: Back up back up back up
For future reference, everyone ought to get one of these: Linksys.com – Products/Wired/Basic Networking/Network Storage/NSLU2 and a couple of USB drives. Network it to your computer, preferably from another room in case of fire, flood or act of non-existent deity and set the internal back-up on. If you copy all your stuff from your hard disk to 'the slug' on a regular basis, you then have three copies of everything; one on your computer and two on the network disks.
Of course, if you're old, cynical and pesimistic like wot I am, you also copy everything to your lap-top in case the entire house burns down. ![]() I sincerely hope you can recover your files, Summerleft.

Re: Back up back up back up
Good offer from Gary there. Another option is to buy a new hard disk, renstall windows on it, then attach your knackered drive as a secondary drive (eg. on same IDE cable). I reckon you stand a good chance the PC will still be able to read the data.
You've probably just had a disk error on some Windows operating files, which stops your PC booting / repairing itself. Once you have it as a secondary drive, fingers crossed you should be ok. (I've done this quite a few times now no probs) Keep us posted |

Re: Back up back up back up
I used to use CD's, then DVD's, and then started using an external hard-drive; now all I have to do is remember the password to my hard-drive and I can access 3 years work

Re: Back up back up back up
Hoping that you are able to recover the lost data...
I try to maintain a reasonable back up regime - at least a weekly to external hard drive, with a further monthly backup to (yet another) hard drive. Good luck. |

Re: Back up back up back up
As others have said there is a good chance of recovering data from the old drive. My daughter unintentionally pressed a RCD test button and knocked all the power off just as my computer was booting up last week which prevented me from re-booting the O/S. It would not even boot in safe mode. This was just the system drive as all my data is on other drives and backed up etc. However, I tried the Recovery disk supplied with the computer and it offered two choices a. Do nothing b. Format the disk and start again. This is not very helpful and I am sure many people follow the latter course and lose their data for good. It is better to buy a new drive and install the O/S then you should be able to connect the old drive and recover all or most of the data. In my case I had used Acronis back up software so I was able to recover to the last back up.
Best of luck with your recovery and dont give up on getting your pics back yet. |
