Well the news has been filled with the subject for the last 2 days, so it's been hard to ignore it. From what I can see Channel 4 is editing the programme for maximum impact, which is always the case with commercial porgrammes.
But has it gone too far when 10,000+ people complain & other countries are now reporting the story ? Do we want other countries to believe the likes of Jade & freinds are your typical British citizen? |

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
what i find hard to believe is that so many people actually take seriously what goes on in this program............ and dont see it as the complete and utter farce that it is. filling a house with a bunch of either wannabees or hasbeens is a recipe for chaos. The racist thing is just another example of this. Some people will go to any lengths to get their name mentioned!
I dont see it as doing any more damage to how people see the average person because i would hope that they realise the participants in this "program" ( and i use the term loosely) are far from average - and not in a positive way. Fi |

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
must admit, until last night I hadn't see much in the way of racism. but then I'm a white hetrosexual male so what do i know...
bullying, now that is a different matter. as for the celeb thing... who cares. this is car crash tv and NOBODY wants to be in a car crash ![]() However, if we accept the racism at face value, let the public vote and said public systematically get rid of the racists... is that such a bad thing for the world to see? If the victim of the racism actually wins, what does that say about britain? |

Im sorry to have to say this but anybody who watches big brother and then calls in to complain about it should have all their human rights suspended, be stopped from voting and be made infertile.
(now that should get a response)

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
Complete and utter garbage the entire concept. It is also crediting a worse than average Channel 4 programme with far greater influence than it really has to suggest that people around the world are judging 60 million people on thier attitudes to foreigners based on a bunch of D list celebrities (at the most) who are chosen on the basis that they will say controversial things.
The programme's producers are having celebration parties right now at the ludicrous amount of publicity this insidious junk has been given because of comments made by an unimportant person to another unimportant person. I am Anglo-Asian and can assure you I have been confronted with MUCH worse comments than 'Can I call you The Indian' or 'Don't let him touch it, you don't know where his hands have been!' Asians hands are far cleaner than most western hands because they culturally wash hands after every slight soiling. They eat with their hands (a lot but not entirely) which means they wash their hands thoroughly before and after meals as well as many other times. Also, English people eat with their hands so why the big deal? Ever eaten a sandwich with a knife and fork? Frankly most Asians or mixed race people would laugh at such childishly absurd attempts to insult. If you heard some of the REALLY offensive things we are expected to laugh of 'as a joke' you would see that this stuff is plain boring. So no, they are not besmurching our reputation around the world. At best they are destroying their own credibility but then the fact they have chosen to put their careers such as they are on the line by entering the stupid programme in the first place rather suggests their integrity was somewhere close to zero in the first place! I have only heard the comments as shown on the news, I have not watched (since the first series which I admit I did see a few times), and never will watch again, the programme. Cheers, rob

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
Reality TV is like Marmite. You like it or you hate it!
It is true th@ you could always just turn the TV off, but th@ will not stop the bullying or the racism. I am glad to see th@ people are standing up and complaining about it, because those actions will be recognised across the world due to the media coverage and hopefully people will see th@ the people in the house are not a true image of our culture. I have been a 'victim' of hate crime and it is not nice, so if any good can come of this, then bring it on! |

Quite frankly the utter stupidity of Ms Goody et al is astonishing. The 3 protagonists haven't a brain cell between them!! (my personal opinion only
don't sue me!!)

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
Shouldn't think so... There's 60 million peeps in the uk.
Celebrity Big Brother's launch show (aired on 2007-01-03) averaged 7.1 million viewers, and ratings fell to 3.9 million by 2007-01-07. Ratings quickly rose as media coverage reported alleged racism towards Shilpa Shetty from fellow female contestants; the episode that aired on 2007-01-16 saw a ratings boost with the show sharing 18% of the available audience and ratings of 4.5 million viewers, as the episode aired on the 2007-01-17 is predicted to be Celebrity Big Brother's top ratings grabber. The episode the following night also rose in ratings, as 5.2 million people viewed the episode. Celebrity Big Brother 2007 (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia So you're not alone

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
I tuned in to the Wednesday night highlight show to see what all the fuss was about and to be frank it was pretty bad... I'm not sure that what I saw was rasist but the bullying aspect was quite disgusting. The behavour of Jade and that other girl from Liverpool (sorry, cant recall her name) and to a lesser extent that S Club girl cannot be excused, I feel their true colours were on full show.
Another point I'd like to make is about the "common girl" comments I keep hearing from Jade. She keep's using the fact that she's "common" as a licence to talk the way she does to people, I hope everyone will start to see this as the slap in the face to the working class people that it is. Being from, and knowing plenty of people with a working class background, I do know that there arn't too many with that level of ignorance and lack of self respect that she seem's to have in abundance... she's a complete disgrace to my eyes, and I hope this comes back to haunt her when she get's out of the house. Sorry folks!

PML @ Dave! "Methinks he doth protest too much" comes to mind!
![]() Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ? I would have to say yes, if only that the perception of the whole thing has become racist in nature But the harsh reality (sorry!) is that it's for today's vacuous to fill their empty minds. Tabloid TV at it's worst! Glad to say that I've only had to watch the first IACGMOOH and that at least had the dubious benefit of being unknown territory. But even then the whole thing was edited and manipulated to ensure the "right" result!

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
See now that is were I have to comment.
If the police are offering her protection then its likely that she will need it. Her comments/actions on the show may not be well thought out or indeed been edited to make her appear to be something that she isn't, however the people that the police feel could be a threat to Jade are IMO worse than racists, editors and the public ringing up and complaining in their 1000's. Its a game show for heavens sake and people quickly lose touch with reality. If only so much time and effort was diverted to helping and fixing the big issues in the world we would have a much better place to live.

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
Of course, if I were a cynical old bugger (well I am, I suppose) I'd be thinking that the producers looked at the viewing figures, then looked at the people they've got in the programme and then had a quiet word in certain earholes.
Allegedly....

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
Iv'e never watched BB until the media started on about it.
I watched it for all of 5 mins after the news, I was disgusted with the language let alone the ignorance shown, ( remember young children are sometimes watching it as well) Professor Stephan Hawkins was at the same time talking about the Doomsday Clock, how close the human race was to extinction due to global warming and consequently severe Alaskan type weather which might happen due to the Global Conveyer Belt losing it's salinity because of all the freshwater entering the ocean. But what was headline, Jade Goodie and her alleged racist remarks. I am of mixed race, my mother was a Geordie and my father was a Shoshone. I have never personally experienced racial tension but my grandson ,who looks Shoshone, has been targeted at his school by Asian children who have thrown stones at him. The school or police did not appear to want to take any action. I have friends who belong to the Sunni religion and they are appalled at what happened to him. The media are always on about racism but my experience shows that it exist on all sides I spent two years in the Yemen and the only racism I encountered was when I sat down at a table with some african airmen and was told to F**k O*f honky. It seems to me that any racism is media led. |

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
It did irritate me that some racist and bullying comments (more bullying than racist, IMHO) were fanned by the production company (the old 'edit to make things worse') to the extent that it was then picked up by the politicians.
So it then became a serious issue instead of being defused by C4 early on (take my word for it, the "we can't interfere" by C4 is total BS!). I see they are now being taken to task for not acting - quite right and proper, but a bit late On the plus side it has provoked debate and anything which does that with a view to reducing/removing racism/bullying must be good. Jade being dropped by the anti-bullying charity at least sends the right signal - indeed, if she now disappears into obscurity it can only be a good message!! Global Warming is a very serious issue which will continue to be debated whatever the outcome of BB (and is a subject way above the empty heads of the BB followers) |

Re: Are Channel 4 causing UK damage with Big Brother show ?
When it was first reported on radio they said there were 200 complaints by the following day there was several thousand - a case of "ooh look at that wagon with a band on it - lets jump on".
The world is going gaga
