Angry EBAY making a killing these days

Just sold an item for £650 yesterday on EBAY, accepting Paypal. Final fees were :-

EBAY - £21
Paypal - £22

Seeing as EBay own Paypal that means a grand total of £43 or 6.6% of sell price

Normally I wouldn't use Paypal, but for this item it had to be delivered quick, so there was no other option for immediate payment.

Imagine how many people sell using Paypal, all paying 6.6% or higher for less valuable items. Easy money

Re: EBAY making a killing these days

I sell my own software using paypal and for each copy they take off 50p which is quite a lot but has the advantage of having no initial outlay...

but yes, is a nice money maker for them

I wouldn't mind half so much if they provided a decent service, but their programming standards are sh*te for openers - I deeply object to paying for the priveledge of doing their testing for them. The "upgrades" aren't so much released as allowed to escape - basic coding blunders abound. Speaking of which, anyone else noticed how Skype's gone down the pan for quality since they took it over? I found myself using MSN for a voice call tonight and that's *dismal*.

I noticed that the latest 'patched' version of skype has ballooned in size and is getting even more resource hungry, while at best the quality seems to have dropped slighty.

I gave up with EBAY Turbo Lister 2 as it basically didn't work.

Re: EBAY making a killing these days

erzackly - which was damned anoying because it worked fine until I allowed them to "upgrade" it. Have you had the entertaining experience of trying to tell them something doesn't work, incidentally? You spend an hour paddling about in their obscure un-help system, and then they blame everything else under the sun and tell you "nobody else has complained".

Reminds me exactly why I quit being software developer (and deffo why I quit running a help desk) for a living.

Re: EBAY making a killing these days

Hehe, no I have not taken that far as complaining. I only use it for internet voice calls and as I pay nothing for that that service, either to them or anyone else I can't really complain when I get it for free. It is annoying though that as it is 'developed' it seems to be getting worse rather than better. I shouldn't be surprised though, we have seen this happen many times before when big companies buy out smaller companies for their innovative technology.

Calls now drop into a black hole instead of whoever you're talking to suddenly sounding like a dalek.

At least MSN give you the option of doing the system (ok they call it beta) testing and try to make it sound exciting. Actually, the worst I've come across is a forum set-up similar to this one. They just unleash untested code most of the time. Which would be borderline acceptable for a free service, except they are taking advertising revenue and pushing the modules as a commercial product. Personally I wouldn't buy services from them based on demonstrated performance, and their programming staff would be stopping regular rockets if they worked for me.

I meant Ebay - and every time i sell something I am paying the jokers. Skype certainly saves a fortune on my phone bill at times. Same with MSN, but at the end of the day the "service" is paid for by advertising and by product sales.
