Re: F1 2007 - Silverstone should be a good race !!
I think Hamilton was switched from a two stop strategy to a three stopper to keep him out of the traffic. Probably a bad decision, he would have lost less time with a two stop strategy.
Ferrari always work well on very smooth tracks. Silverstone is more bumpy so it will be interesting to see how they cope with it. |

Re: F1 2007 - Silverstone should be a good race !!
Yes, I watched the race. Presumably McClaren's computer showed that a 3 stop strategy could be an advantage but the computer does not know what everyone else is doing. It seemed risky anyway though Shumaker successfully used a 3 stop at this circuit once though he may have been way out in front at the time. Still, if you take off the 20 seconds Hamilton lost by 3 stopping, he would almost certainly still have been third.

I watched most of the race today and will be looking forward to Silverstone although it's not my favourite track.

Hi All,
I didn't watch the race but do you think that those 2 ferrari boys were allowed first and second places on the podium just to bring a little bit off interest back into the sport![]() There are so many tracks where cars cannot overtake and positions are now won and lost in the pit stops instead off on the track. Plus the poor performance of most off the cars makes for a race between half a dozen cars, can get a little boring ![]() And that Bernie Ecclestone ![]() John |

I approve of Silverstone. Thanks to the chaos it causes in that part of the country, I get to work from home for the next three days

You sure about that? After his "monkeys" comment I'm pretty sure maclaren are a bit nervous about lewis passing backmarkers - especially when they are bunched up.

On the radio this morning Mark Webber said that Hamilton wouldn't be in it if he wasn't driving a McLaren. Could just be sour grapes though.

Re: F1 2007 - Silverstone should be a good race !!
He could be driving a McLaren and still not be "in it". Sure, the car would give him top 6 finishes if he was just a competent driver, but he's been on the podium every race, won 2 of them, and has been comfortably ahead of his team mate, no slouch himself, so far this season. I have no doubt Webber believes he could do that too (or he wouldn't be in F1), I'm just not sure I agree with him. Anyway, it's a team sport, you need driver input to build a car as good as the McLaren, and you need driver input to keep it at the front of the grid. The McLaren that runs in the last race of the year will be a very different car to the one that ran in the first race.
BTW, races are not won "in the pitlane". They are won in the laps around a pit stop, where the car that stays out longer can (try) and put in laps significantly faster than the car they had been racing can manage with is heavy fuel load after his stop. If all goes to plan, the later car to stop emerges after his stop a few seconds up the road, and is said to have "passed him in the pits" when in reality he did it by driving a few laps at a faster pace, something he could only do because he had more fuel to begin with, so he was doing quite well to be racing with the other car at all, and should pull away from him now. That might not look as dramatic as a dive up the inside into a corner, but once you understand whats happening, it's probably more impressive. Schumacher was the master of this stuff, able to pull qualifying laps out of the car on worn tyres in the middle of a race, almost on the demand of Ross Brawn. Don't think for a second just anyone can do that.
