Re: Family Tree Advice.

Ancestry is supposed to be quite good. I've only tried the free version which doesn't give you too much info but I don't think it's that expensive to sign up to. Then you have all the Census information but I think that goes as far as 1902 on the net! I think family tree research is more slogging through paperwork rather than on the net though.

Re: Family Tree Advice.

yeah if you want to be able to get in touch with people etc i think its about 7.99 for a years subscription. but you can still read the posts and use it to make a tree up i think.

most of the geneology ones you have to pay something for, but sometimes a one off payment to genesreunited is better value than a p[ay by search one as there are a lot of folks on genesreunited that will say they are going to the records office and will search for you etc.

Re: Family Tree Advice.

My father's side of the family has all been done right back to 1272, a formidable tree by any standards. I thought about doing my mother's side but got to just two generations and gave up. Why? Because my sweet little grandmother wasn't quite as innocent as I had imagined! She had at least 11 children by at least 4 different fathers. Some were adopted, others fostered, others lived together. It is a whole spiders web and most of my mothers brothers and sisters are all gone as is my mother so I just can't summon the energy to tackle it!

My wife is doing her's and is doing ok, she has got back to the 1700's but is forever taking me off to places to look around cemeteries and things! Still, usually a decent stone to get a shot of somewhere :o)

I wish your father well with his searching and sorry this reply has not been the slightest help whatsoever!

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Family Tree Advice.

I always read your replies with interest Rob thanks

I have just been on the phone to my father and it was interesting to hear how much privately people would do the work for him and charge him on an hourly rate .......wonder how much I should charge him

Interestingly (to me anyway) was that his dads dad went to America a became a private butler to Henry Ford and this is where he has become a little stuck.

Thanks for all the replies everyone
