Re: Freaky!!

WOW ...it works. I first thought it's just a colour shot then moved my eyes & it was mono. Still a bit suspicous as Java has to be enabled, so thought it was trickery, but from looking at page source it looks legite

Shows how easy it is to get screen burn on the old retina must load screen saver to brain

Re: Freaky!!

Nothing new or clever as such, just an innovative way of testing a well known trick of the eyes. Everyone knows that if you stare at a solid block of a primary colour and then shift your gaze onto something like a white sheet of paper, you will see an image in the inversion of that colour, e.g. stare at a yellow square for 30 seconds and you'll see a blue square, red will go to yellow, etc.

This same thing happens with the other colours to and this image is simply an inversion of the original photo so when you move the image away quickly after staring at it, you see the inversions, ie the original colours.

This is all down to the relative depths of the three primary colours and how they are absorbed by the light sensitive cells at the back of the eye. Indeed, that principle is how the Foveon chip used by Sigma and beloved of Markulous works, allowing them to record any of the colours on one pixel instead of on three.

Anyway, that is as far as I am going, not going to get all technical on this as that would bore the pants off me writing it let along you reading it :o)

Interesting to see it applied in this way and good to see how the eyes work with regards to colour.
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Freaky!!

Sorry to say it guys, but that's a con!

This proves it:

Code:
<a href="#" onMouseOut="MM_swapImgRestore()" onMouseOver="MM_swapImage('big','','2006_stuffs/manzana2.jpg',1)"><img src="2006_stuffs/manzana1.jpg" name="big" width="720" height="495" border="0"></a>
First image: http://www.johnsadowski.com/2006_stuffs/manzana1.jpg

Second image: http://www.johnsadowski.com/2006_stuffs/manzana2.jpg

The code above simply swaps to the second image when the mouse goes over the first, and then back when it moves out!

That's the whole point, it's not a con. You stare at the first image and then let it swap to the second image, instead of looking like a greyscale it appears to be in colour until you blink or move your eyes. Nothing too amazing, as Rob says but easy to make and quite good fun.

Re: Freaky!!

That's the whole point Nathan, as your rollover explanation showed, the only images there are an inverted colour image and a mono image so the fact the image then looks coloured properly when you look at the mono image shows the effect.

Stare at the date intently on the colour image for thirty seconds and then move the mouse over WITHOUT EVER moving your gaze. You MUST continue staring at the dot and avoid the temptation to look around the picture or it will immediately go back to mono. Use your peripheral vision to see the colours rather than focused vision.

By the way, if you want to see the green more clearly, don't focus on the dot. Just pick a spot of grass and focus on that instead, you'll see it much greener when you move the mouse over as it doesn't require peripheral vision :o)

Kep trying, you'll get there.
Cheers,
Rob

Not sure why you say Java has to be enabled Dave. It is a standard rollover image which is just html so no need for any java script for this to work. Am I missing something?

Added: Ah, I see why, it says so at the top of the page! I guess the guy did the rollover using java but can't see why. Perhaps it is to keep it working cross-browser or something. Ok, forget I asked. :o)

Cheers,
Rob
