A Friday night to forget.....
Went to a friends birthday party on Friday night, and they decided to have some fireworks in the back garden...... well my 5yr old daughter Megan got hit by a rocket that exploded about 1 foot off the ground. I didn't realise until I saw her hair on fire and she was screaming. Rushed her inside and took her coat / t-shirt off, the firework had hit her head and then fell inside her coat, burning her shoulder. We took her to hospital as I was concerned it had gone near her eye, but they said she was fine apart from the minor burn to her shoulder.
She was obviously very upset, but to her credit she was more concerned about the big hole burnt into her new High School Musical t-shirt we'd bought from London the week before and the fact we'd left her friends party early. We usually only watch fireworks at organised displays, now I know why.

Re: A Friday night to forget.....
I guess it is only the thought that it could have been worse that is any consolation. Thank God it was not.
When I look back over the years that we have had fireworks in the garden, right from when I was a boy, it is a miracle that a serious accident did not happen. Note the word serious. When my boys were little I was very twitchy with fireworks. Even properly organised displays are not without their accidents, there are usually one or two stories similar to yours most years. Problem is with them is that the fireworks are weapons grade and do a lot more damage if things go wrong.

Re: A Friday night to forget.....
Sorry to hear about that mate, I hope that she gets better soon with no lasting damage,
My wife works at the childrens hospital in Sheffield and you can only begin to imagine what gets brought in to see her. Many of the fireworks that are sold today should not be purchased for home displays, I have seen on some of them that you light the blue touch paper then retire 25-35 metres. Well not that many people have gardens that long. |

Sorry to hear that, and hope she'll make a quick recovery.
I'm amazed that there aren't more accidents - some of the fireworks sold today are more like mortar bombs. |

We were in 2 minds whether we should go, but they do say sometimes its better to get straight back out there. She was very brave, and looking at the burns tonight they seem to be healing pretty quick. ![]() |

Re: A Friday night to forget.....
Hi Ian, I'm glad no serious damage was done and that her injuries are starting to heal up well already, with a full recovery hopefully not far off.

Re: A Friday night to forget.....
Sorry To Hear About Your Daughter Ian , Unfortunately I Think The Time
Has Come To Ban Fireworks, Except For Organized Displays. They Seem To Become More Dangerous Every Year. This Year It Seemed Like We Were Living In The Blitz. You Don't Only Get Them For A Couple Of Nights, They Go On For Weeks. |
