Probably a stoopid question, but how does cashback work?

Nikon/Canon "Cashback" offers are advertised periodically. But what does it all mean? Why not just say "discount". Or do you have to buy extra stuff in order to claim the "cash" "back

Not sure about Nikon but with Canon you just buy the item at it's regular price, fill out a form you print off from Canon's site, cut out the barcode on the item's box and send it into Canon along with filled out form... then wait for the cheque.

I'm sure Nikon's process would be something simular.

The retailers make the same amount of profit during the scheme as afterwards/before so they also buy at the same price. Canon/Nikon provide the Cashback themselves and YOU have to claim it back, some people will naturally forget, or just can't be bothered so for those sales, Canon/Nikon will make the full mark up as well. Basically its good business from the companies (more sales and same profit) and manufacturers point of view (more brand loyalty, higher market share etc) and usually an extra incentive for the public too.
