I've been in hospital for an "Examination under Anaesthetic" to sort out a relatively minor but painful problem on the part of my anatomy generally used for sitting! You can add an "h" in there too if you like. (Of course, the - hopefully temporary - result of this is that I now cannot sit down! )

Anyway, it's the first time I've had a general anaesthetic and I can thoroughly recommend it. All I remember is someone saying, "Now just relax, Paul" and the next thing I knew was being in the recovery ward totally oblivious, although with a PITA!

A great pity they don't sell that stuff in tablet form, although I do recall that one of my uni lecturers had a similar effect....

Snag with a general for this is that you only have their word that they only did that procedure!

The surgeon that operated on me was the author of a well known book called..."My Knife in Your Glands" joking aside I have been on the operating table twice...now that anaesthetic would be great when going to Australia you could just get on the plane have the jab and then wake up when you are landing 18hours later.....in Perth WA......

i hate generals.......... you feel like throwing up everywhere and generally feel as if you have been run over by a steam roller................ i hate the out of control feeling that it gives you when u fight hard to stay awake! lol arghhhhhhhhhhhhh but in saying that i would never ever EVER have a local apart from at the dentist

The GA wasn't a problem - no after-effects luckily! Just a sore bum! District nurse has been today to re-pack and re-dress the wound. It's a pelonidal sinus, in case anyone's interested. I'm not asking you to kiss it better!

Glad to hear that all went well but have a certain sympathy for the nurse!

Advantage with local is that at least you can check they're doing the right procedure! Twice I've been admitted into hospital (once with GA) and twice they've got it wrong (and the GA one was the one with the wrong procedure!). Still, I can't complain as when I was delivered they carried out a life saving procedure, later written up in The Lancet (I was a Rhesus baby)

no way would i want to watch them doing anything............ and i have an unfortunate ability to react really badly to GA'a which isnt helped when they give me morphine .......... and then discover im allergic to it! which i found out when i had my spinal surgery 14 years ago!

Well if it doesn't hurt I'd rather be awake.
I remember being internally investigated by my consultant for a prostate problem.He had a group of junior surgeons in toe and after he started the examination I remember saying ,look when you get up to your armpit will you stop please.
You can't do that when your in deep slumber
