paypal question

Has anyone come across paypal sending limits. Paaypal are saying I`ve reached my sending limit and must now either apply for a paypal credit card ( rip off) or set up a random access direct debit to my bank account which I am unwilling to do. I like to pay via credit card, if something goes wrong with a credit card transaction you can generally get your money back.

Re: paypal question

Do you mean 'spending' limit? Are you sure this message has come from PayPal and isn't a scam? I've not come across this before, and I'd have thought that you could spend up to your CC limit. PayPal shouldn't worry if they get the money from the CC company.

Re: paypal question

I have hit this problem in the past. The way around it is to have a bank account confirmed on your account. This is done through your CP and they then deposit two small amounts into the bank account that you register. One they appear you go back to PayPal and input those amounts and they then lift your sending/receiving limits. Note that when you go through the initial stages of registering a bank account they then direct you straight to the direct debit form. What you need to do is just select cancel at that point and everything else goes through without setting up the direct debit

Hope that helps

Re: paypal question

Definately paypal, tried to buy a used d200 off ebay and everytime I tried to pay fot the message sending limits ( paypals word for spending limit) sent seller An email and tried to again at the start of the new month today. My paypal account shows all transactions to paypal paid, still unable to pay seller. Have now had to tell seller That I`m unable to pay. So stuff paypal I`ve cancelled my account
Edit: just read your post steve, ah well too late now. Will just have to open a new account. Although I do feel that paypal should have alerted me, and not leave it for me to find out when I had tried to pay the seller. Feel let down by paypal.

Re: paypal question

Yeah it comes up after a while, you have to verify your account, the direct debit only takes what you spend from your bank account, if you ever do.

Its basically for fraud purposes, so they have more info on you.

I did it a year a go and had no problems.

They did let you know, it's in the T&C's when you sign up.

Re: paypal question

the only problem with having it come from your bank account is that it takes up to 10 days its classed as an E cheque, best thing to do is to transfer money frmo your account into your paypal account and then it will go to the seller immediatly

Re: paypal question

Some Ebay sellers will only sell to buyers with a verified Paypal a/c. so it's just as well to do it anyway, and it's pretty painless really.

This happened to me recently when I already had my Barclay card registered. My spending limit prevented me purchasing a camera from the Canon_uk refurbished items site.
I never got a satisfactory explanation from PayPal what this limit was and I have since registered my bank account direct debit. It seems to work ok and I have sold and purchased items under this method .When I have requested the money that has accumulated through e-bay sales it went into my bank account within 24 hours.

It seems PayPay prefers a bank account that a credit card account because they never now debit my credit card
I hope this helps.Brian

Re: paypal question

Thanks all, now I understand. I do think that paypal should have sent an email telling me that I had reached the limit, and an explanation on how to resolve it.

Re: paypal question

Brian, and billz, you can still put purchases onto your credit card. It's just that Paypal defaults to your bank a/c., once you've registered it. However, there is an option to manually choose your credit card as the method of payment.

Thanks for highlighting this fact Charlotte. Did you ever find out why PayPal intervenes with this credit limit when your Credit Card status has not changed?.

Re: paypal question

They prefer bank debits rather than CC as its more difficult to fraud with bank accounts and they don't generally expire after a couple of years. Also with bank debits the money is either there or its not and Paypal don't complete the transfer until they have all the funds...much safer for them. No chargebacks or later reports of stolen credit cards
