Remins me of Insurance Company that provides ....

..free cover for 14 days & if you don't like the quote you just cancel. I used this company to get tax disc for missus's new car, but for the life of me can't remember which one it was

Off to look at a cheap 2nd car , that I would like to insure on above scheme, so if I like it I can drive it home, then change over to cheaper insurance

Anyone advise ?

Dave - probably easier to get your 'new' car as a 'temporary additional vehicle' on your existing insurance. (Or vice versa). When I changed a car some time ago, and had the problem of two cars to cover, my company extended the cover to the new one for two weeks to enable me to sell the old one. it was not free, but it was very reasonable.
