So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

Having a father who was heavily in to Hi Fi all his life, as a kid I was used to music blasting away all day & the inevitable trips to the local hifi shops over the weekend. A few years back I managed to get a decent system together, only to lose it to a flood

Since then I've been making do with a Roberts DAB radio . But recently I've been dropping into www.hifiwigwam.com (reccomended) & like any decent forum , I'm getting drawn in to the need to get some new kit Time will tell. I've started with some Grado SR225 headphones plugged in to my IPOD

So is anyone else in to HiFi ? What's your system made up from ? Are you a serial upgrader ?

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

Can you put iPod and Hi-Fi in the same sentence?

Whilst I can't claim anything like fidelity on my system now, the neighbours might have something to say about the 2 1/2 amps (well, the PC is arguably a 1/2 amp!) and 7 speaker system.......... connected to my PC (where all my MP3s reside!)

As far as headphones go, I've a set of Koss Pro4As - the bees knees pro headphones a few years back and still as good as ever!

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

I have a Sharp mini-system for the kitchen and if I want something better I have a Bang and Olufsen deck, amp and speakers in the cellars. It's about thirty years old but still belts out quality.

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

Nobody said it better than Flanders & Swann...

I had a little gramophone,
I'd wind it round and round.
And with a sharpish needle,
It made a cheerful sound.

And then they amplified it,
It was much louder then.
So we sharpened finer needles,
To make it soft again.
:
:
High frequency range,
Complete with auto-change.
All the highest notes neither sharp nor flat,
Though the ear can't hear as high as that.
Still, I ought to please any passing bat,
With my high fidelity.

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

Very good

Used to have an all Linn system, which I've now found is selling for about 2/3 what I paid s/h .... very tempting to go that route again

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

Main components of mine are now about 35 years old.

Quad 33/303 - Tannoy Lancaster 15 dual cone 4 cubic feet enclosures - Thorens TD 150 turntable (never did get around to getting an SME arm....)

Later additions - Yamaha cassette deck - (can get close to CD quality using metal tape) - Sony CD player and Videotronic digital radio tuner.

The amp and speakers were bought for best quality, the turntable and other stuff for best quality and VFM.

Re: So anyone into Hi-Fi ?

I have the following:

Arcam Alpha 10
Arcam CD192
Sony 940 minidisk
Sony 920 Tuner
Aelte 3 floorstanding speakers
Systemdek electronic turntable with Roksan arm
All with top quailty interconnects

I upgraded the speakers and cd player about 2 years ago. The speakers sound amazing. The best upgrade I did though was to move the whole system into the loft (last week) where I have recenty completed a loft conversion myself. The whole of the loft is almost the same size as the whole area of my bungalow. My hi-fi now sounds absolutely awsome!!! Best upgrade i've done yet!
