Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
Well as I told willow, RIcks company have got him an account manager over there to find him a placement, realistically we will be looking at early 2009, with the pets going to cost us 5k and living costs we are going to save everything I earn, Im also going to take on another job as well as the business and we will just save everything I bring in. Still moving in April as its c loser to work for him but a year will pass in a flash.
Havent told parents yet, I know they will be very upset, but we are doing what you suggested Mickeymax and saying its for 1-2 years at first and see what we think. Gah scarey or what! |

Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
i dont get it , im sorry, but all the problems being faced in this country are or will be faced the world over. its a case of the grass is always greener on the other side, sorry its not.
everyone says how everyone they know loves it etc , but there are just as many that dont, of the three people i know who moved to Australia, only one of them is still there, of the other two one spent 3 years there and one spent just over a year, both of them couldnt get back home quick enough. why do people always seem to want more...... no one ever seems to be happy with their lot any more. Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
Sorry don't see it like that Fi, you only get one chance at this and if we can experience as much as possible then why not, before Aus we always wanted to try Canada and still may, we have lived in the South, midlands and north of england and liked some places and not others.
Why should we just sit and take whats thrown at us without giving something else a try if we can. Theres a whole world out there as they say. |

Thats what OH was on about SD, if we have a family things will just keep moving on and we wont be able to do it, however it wont be yet, just cant afford to right away, and you never know things change, but deffinately is an exciting prospect.

Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
I don't think it has anything to do with 'not being happy with our lot' Fi. Surely we all like to improve our own living standards if we have the opportunity to do so? The grass is not always greener on the other side but frankly the grass on this side is getting browner by the day <sic> and I am beginning to despair of the nation we are becoming in the UK.
I am as British as they come and would rather live here than anywhere. But I do not want to live in the nanny state that we have been made into over the last few years. We are constantly told what we must think and if we don't agree then it is tough look. If we don't agree with a certain view we are this-phobic or that-intolerant. I wouldn't choose Australia if it was the only place left, the place leaves me completely and utterly cold. But that is my own opinion and I would never seek to make someone else feel the same. I am probably in a small minority in that I think I'd rather live in the States than in Oz but my first love and first choice every time would be to live right where I do now. But to tell someone who is a generation younger than I am that they should simply accept this country and what it is fast becoming and not look to take hold of the opportunity to make a life elsewhere if they have the chance, I simply can't do that. Britain is losing its identity faster than any nation on earth because a few politicians have decided we should be the open door of the world and be as cosmopolitan as they want us to be. Just one example: even in a very conservative (small C) area like Bournemouth, we are seeing more and more shops and businesses with signs in Polish because we have so many who have chosen to come and live here and if anyone dares to suggest that this is a problem, they are accused of being racist! Note, there is NOTHING the government can now do to limit the entire countries of Poland, Bulgaria, Romania and all other EU countries moving here if they want to: they have the 'right' to live here under EU law. We were told we were being silly when we said a lot would want to do so, the government insisted it would be no more than 50-60,000. When that number became ten times that and continues growing at a rapid rate, they admitted they had got it wrong but we could do nothing about it and, anyway, we should welcome them because they take jobs others don't want. Of course they do, they are prepared to work in skilled jobs for minimum wage! Anyway, I'll jump off my high horse, this is something I do admit to feeling srongly about. I just feel that if it is so imortant that everyone else is given the right to move here if they want to, then we should also recognise that plenty of people here will want to move elsewhere. The telling factor though is that most of the people who want to go and live elsewhere are not in the slightest interested in moving to countries they have a 'right' to move to. They don't want to reciprocate the moves and go and live in Eastern Europe! I love Britain and welcome its diversity of culture but I do feel there still needs to be an identity we recognise as British even within that diversity. Go for it Summer, whatever you choose, be happy ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
well i for one do not and never have considered myself British, I dont care and am not interested in Britain, I am Scottish and the only culture and identity I follow is a Scottish one. The quicker Britain loses its identity and becomes 4 seperate countries the better.
I would never say dont better yourself, thats not at all what i meant, I just feel more and more people take what they think is the easy way out for something they think is better when they dont see what they have around them. Its a case of you cant see the wood from the trees. At the end of the day if Britain is so bad then WHY are all these folks coming to live here? cant be that bad then hey can it or are all these thousands of people wrong? Fi |

Re: Thinking of jumping ship, ta ta UK
Just wanted to say that I started this topic to get any opinions from people who have or are thinking of emigrating, as a positive step to deciding.
I have seen much of England, lived in the south, midlands and north and enjoyed many things about each one, moving away does not mean dropping it or our heritage, just that we want to experience life to the fullest, we cannot comment on what we haven't seen. |
