Top of the World
On the 6th of June, I board a plane. Destination: Thule, Greenland. I'll be there for a year, 700 miles north of the Artic Circle. So far north in fact, that magnetic "north" on a compas points west. Left behind, my better half, and our 4 month old son Damien. It's hard for me to believe that the next time I see him, he'll be almost a year and a half old. Leaving, especially now and for so long, isn't something I want to do exactly, but it is something I have to do.
Thinking of all the firsts that I'm going to miss breaks my heart, I only hope the experiences I have while I'm gone can in some way make up for them. |

Re: Top of the World
Hey LB that's a tough call, and your project must be very special. Will you be able to keep in touch with the family with a web cam? Either way, if you have not got a video camera get one before you go and a compact for your Wife to record the moments that you are going to want to be able to re-live for all time.

Re: Top of the World
I've been working the IT and Telecom field for the past 7 years, and I've been trying to get out of it for the past 6. Going to Thule isn't exactly getting me out of this work, it's just another branch of it. But at the end of my year, I will be able to leave IT behind.
While I'm there though, I'll be flying sattelites. |

Re: Top of the World
Well, it sounds like a life-changing opportunity, and I wish you a successful + happy venture, + indeed adventure
I do hope you manage to get back to see them sometime during the year ![]() Will you still be with us on pixalo while your compass is pointing west? |

Re: Top of the World
I don't see why not, though I'm not a frequent poster as it is. I spend an hour or 2 on the site about every other day, I just don't say much.

Re: Top of the World
I'll be sure to post them. It'll be interesting to see what presents itself to the camera durring the "dark season."

Re: Top of the World
Well, I arrived safely. Haven't had a chance to get out and shoot yet though. When it hasn't been raining, the wind has been coming in at a steady 70+kts, pushing the windchill into the -C numbers.. more than enough to discourage me from being outside.
24 Hours of daylight is a little interesting.. Sort of feel like I'm in the movie Groundhog Day. |

Groundhog Day! LOL! Good to hear from you!
The 5 knot wind here has been giving me grief with trying to get macro shots! ![]() And it's been kind of warm @ 24C

Re: Top of the World
WOW, what a life changing experience. Keep us posted
![]() I used to work with a girl who's boyfreind studied penguins & had to disappear off somewhere cold for 6 months at a time. Tough call, but sometimes you have to do what is best for you in the long run. |
