What was it

Turned my P.C. on as usual this morning to find an extra icon on the screen.
It was labelled as group sharing and was not a shortcut like the rest.
I did a virus check and disc clean but it was still there, I went into the program screen and it was not listed as being on the computer.
I managed to disable it but it was still there so I did a system restore followed by a re-boot and that got rid of it, but where did it come from and what was it for?
Before I exit after using my P.C I always do a disc clean and a system scan and clean so cant work this out, any ideas?

Re: What was it

Did you right click on it and go to properties>open file location to see where it was on your computer? That might give a clue as to its source.

Re: What was it

It wouldn't right click Graham, so no properties, even if it did I am not sure I would open something I didn't know, or where it had come from. I have Net protect plus and MacAfee real time scanning on all the time, my only thought is it was in the original OS and some how actuated itself.
Maybe its a sign that I should get a new PC, this one is 6 years old now and I have been toying with the idea of getting a chillblast one with windows 10 professional so it wont keep "updating" on me.

Right clicking and seeing where the file is on your computer will not open it, but as that was not an option in this case it must have just been on your desktop.

6 years is a good innings for a computer these days and I don't think any of mine have gone past this age. You could opt for upgrades if you did not want to use Windows 10, but the costs would be fairly high and not far off a new unit. Might be worth thinking about though.

Re: What was it

Just a cautionary note. Win10 Pro lets you defer updates to a time that you want, but it won't let you stall it indefinitely and there will come a time that it will force a reboot to install updates and no-one can stop it doing it. I find that having a set of batch files to modify registry entries back to what I want is a good short cut after Windows updates, as it will reset things to how it thinks they should be...

Group sharing sounds like something to do with networking to me.

Re: What was it

Thanks Graham and Stephen, it looks like it may be an idea to look at Mac for my next PC if I have to have unwanted updates imposed on me, or even having a photo only machine off web as well as a "normal" one so I can download programs etc. Unfortunately being a dinosaur I am not well up on computers so a lot is a bit of a mystery to me.

Or get Windows 7 put on it - though you would have to buy it.

Can you still buy Windows 7? Thought that was discontinued ages ago.

Re: What was it

Chris when I first got a computer I was told to always make a recovery disc of the OS
I have the OS of this one (windows 7 premium) on my lacie quadra back up HDs so I wonder if it could be put on to a new computer
It's the thought of all the faff that makes me reluctant to change.

I don't think that a recovery disc will do a clean install - and your copy of Win 7 might well be linked to your machine too.

Still being sold at various outlets including amazon and ebuyer

Still also available in MSDN as most companies won't upgrade past it.

The ones I've found have been fake - including listings from the seller that you link to. I'm suspicious that this might be a dummy listing with no bad reviews.

There is no mention of Win 7 on the MSDN web site

Re: What was it

You can however download Win7 from the Microsoft download site

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...nload/windows7

This link can be found from a pcworld.com article on how to reinstall Windows when you don't have a disk. For article, read "video".

Re: What was it

as for win7 v. win10. I'm siding with windows 10 these days. Microsoft got their act together after the boondoggle of 8.x.

Windows 7 goes EOL in 2020. Then it gets the status of XP. if you keep your computer 5-6 years that puts you past extended support EOL... I'd just get 10, take my lumps with learning it's features and be done with it. also enjoy that 10 is pretty much more efficient and does more with less ram. (yes I couldn't believe it myself, but I benchmarked it out one day)...

Also, it has the start menu back! :-)

I'm still a Mac user. Support Macs and Windows machines for money. Something I've noticed is a distinct downturn on service calls with win10. It manages itself pretty well. The only time I see them is when hard drives die or someone REALLY screws the pooch and gets the system so mucked up that system retire won't fix it and they are either ignorant of, or too lazy to run system restore on their name brand PC...

Re: What was it

Thanks for that Loyd, my main worry is the "uninvited" updates. The reason being that on 7 I found it kept doing an update that removed my windows explorer. As I cant walk enough to go shopping etc. I rely on my computer for shopping, Drs appointments and suchlike.
I turned off the auto update and had no problems since, however if 10 cant have the updates turned off I will have problems I am sure, and will have to keep doing system restore to keep what I want on my computer.

Re: What was it

I've never tried this, and have no idea if it would work, so perhaps someone could enlighten me. It seems to me that if you don't have internet access, Win10 couldn't check for updates and install them. While disconecting your network cable (I use a wired network) might be a drastic step, I wonder if you can configure your router to block the Microsoft site.

I did find once that having disconected my cable to ensure no internet access while I did something, I still had a connection as my motherboard seems to include a wireless network controller. I had to go into settings to turn that off. I imagine that most people are completely wireless these days though.

If this did work, the downside would be not getting the security fixes that Microsoft produce; how much at risk you are I don't know.

CHARLES, BUY A MAC, YOU WILL THEN NOT HAVE ANYMORE PROBLEM WITH UPDATES POPPING UP ON THE SCREEN ALL THE TIME, THIS WAS ONE OF THE REASONS I STOPPED USING A WINDOWS COMPUTER.

I HAVE BEEN USING A MACBOOK PRO, FOR EIGHT TO NINE YEARS NOW, WOULD NEVER USE ANYTHING ELSE, NEVER GET PESTERED WITH POP UPS ETC, IN MY OPINION MAC'S ARE THE BEST

Food for thought there Stephen, Woody I have been considering going Mac but not sure if I fancy having to get new programs to run on it, I think DXO would send me the Mac versions as an update but not the others.
