At What Cost Health

further to VP's reply in another thread i have decided to start a new one.....

How much does it actually cost to be healthy,.

ImHO not a lot... now i know people use poverty as an excuse for unhealthy lifestyle.. but is it really?

You dont have to buy organic( no such thing anyway) produce..... just plain old fruit and veg..... if you cant buy fresh buy frozen. cut down on the dairy and wheat products..... right back on animal fats ( especially red meats)........ drink water instead of fizzy juice.... no alcohol or caffiene........... and a little bit of imagination to make meals interesting.
These days with all the cut price stores about selling fruit and veg, its not as expensive.

the problem as I see it is not the expence, its the knowledge and the fact its easier to bung something in the micro than it is to bake a potato...... its easier to stop a bairn whinging by giving them a fizzy sweet drink than it is to encourage them to drink fruit squash/ fruit juice or good old fashioned water..... so my point is that its not down to money. its down to laziness.

Re: At What Cost Health

in monetary terms it is not that expensive but in time terms it seems to be.Time is now a commodity for many of us and we are willing to buy it. My experience is the more money I make the more stressed I get the more stressed I get the more time I want the more time I want the lazier I get the lazier I get the poorer my eating habits the poorer my eating habits the more stressed I get the more stressed ...hold on looks like I am in a loop here...........................................

Re: At What Cost Health

Dunno that a bunch of peeps prepared to spend hundreds if not thousands on a hobby are necessarilly the best bunch to speak about poverty.

I can tell you as a single person you get £38 a week on the dole. You have no rent or council tax worries but from that £38 you have to feed and cloth yourself plus pay any bills you have.

In addition, those on low income are hit the most by penalty fees. Electric & gas payment meters are known to be more expensive than direct debit. A single bank charge can wipe out a weeks dole. For those on low income, a fridge that packs in is way more expensive than for someone who can buy it outright due to having to pay interest on the credit terms.

When all this piles up your last concern really is your RDA of vitamin C. You just want to eat.

Re: At What Cost Health

That's very true Peel but buying ready meals and junk food is surely not the cheapest option when you are on a low income?

Re: At What Cost Health

In truth I don't know. I can screw up a boiled egg so try to avoid the kitchen wherever possible.

You price up a lasagna for one. Include the energy costs to make it.

In ready meal form it costs £0.99 + 6 minutes in the microwave.

Oh, it can be if you shop smart: so long as you peruse the "buy one get one free" offers at the supermaket, you can walk away with an entire weeks shopping for around about the £15 mark...

There was a TV programme on a while back in which former MP Michael Portillo had to step into the shoes of a single mother living off benefits for a week. He had to feed and clothe the kids (and himself) and keep the house in order for no more than she recieved in benefits.

At the end of the week he confessed that he didn't know how she manages on so little money - he found it almost impossible. Yet she does so each and every day.

My wife and I both firmly believe that the most acute financial brains in this country belong to a select group single mothers; if they were the captains of industry and in charge of our economies, this country would be in a lot better shape than it is

indeed but you're opinions would be of little value to a nasa scientist.

I realise we're only talking here, not trying to change anything, so it's best not to take it too seriously but at the end of the day you've got to at least have some first hand experience so you don't end up sounding like a complete Boris.

I humbly suggest you try living on that and see how long you last.

Been there, done that - tho grant you was a few years ago as a student, when I hitched everywhere, "meat" was minced gristle dyed red from the market and binge drinking didn't exist (but could never be afforded - by us anyway!). But we all made the effort and cooked - even if it was only beans on toast!
